Dark Deity (which initially released in 2021), by Freedom Games, was officially released on the Nintendo Switch March 17, 2022. This game is a Tactical Role Playing Game (RPG) that takes place in a fantasy world. I like these genres of games, and I am glad to say that this game is both good and fun to play for people who enjoy this genre as well.
Gameplay
The basic gameplay for Dark Deity is actually pretty simple for people who have played Tactical RPGs. In fact, players who have played the Tactical RPG Fire Emblem will notice the many similarities of these games. Dark Deity plays very similarly to the game with the basics. The layout is pretty similar to where it feels kind of like you are playing each level on a chess board. The units that players can use are similar as well. Players will be able to use units who use swords, lances, bows, healers, etc. The units all function similarly, as well (melee units attack one space apart, while ranged units attack two spaces apart). With these similarities, one could argue that this game is just a copy and paste.
However, I believe there are enough differences in terms of strategy, where this game is not a copy and paste. One example I have noticed with this is that some units attack best against certain units, while doing poorly against other units. I also do not just mean that there is a weapon triangle (Rock, Paper, Scissors scenario). Certain sword units do better against certain sword units, while doing worse against other sword units. I understand what I just stated makes no sense since it is hard for me to explain (and it also doesn’t help that I do not understand myself), but try to imagine that it feels like there are more than one kind of the same unit.
The gameplay of Dark Deity is not the only thing about it that is good. There is also a story that I enjoyed. I am not going to go into the story (since I understand people may not want to get spoiled) but the story is very interesting. Overall, I believe this game executes the basics of a Tactical RPG very well, while also putting its own unique spin on the game so that it isn’t just a copy and paste.
Final thoughts
Overall, Dark Deity is a pretty good Tactical RPG. There are similarities to the game Fire Emblem, but puts a unique spin to it. I believe people who have played games such as Fire Emblem (or people who just enjoy these genres of games) would enjoy playing this game. If you are the kind of person who enjoys Tactical RPGs, this is the game for you. For people who want to buy the game on the Nintendo Switch, visit the eShop. For others who may not have a Nintendo Switch, the game is also on Steam.
