Eclipse: Edge of Light Review for Nintendo Switch

Eclipse: Edge of Light is a puzzle/exploration game by developer White Elk wherein you play as an astronaut who has crash-landed on a mysterious planet.

An artifact you find early in the game is central to both the game’s plot as well as many of its puzzles. To use the artifact, you throw it at things to activate and/or break them. The artifact will always return to you after you throw it.

The puzzles are straightforward enough that you can solve most of them by just looking around for a bit. The one exception to this is a puzzle where you need to use the artifact to break a stalagmite from a ceiling. I didn’t know I could do that (there was nothing to indicate the stalagmite was breakable) and I spent longer than I care to admit trying to solve that puzzle.

While Eclipse: Edge of Light doesn’t offer much explanation in the beginning, you can unlock text entries that explain the game’s backstory by scanning various objects. There are also occasional holograms, which I assume are being displayed by the artifact, to add to the scenes. In fact, while the game has no spoken dialog, it does a good job of explaining the story simply through these scans and holograms.

There are also a few entries/holograms that can only be accessed if you have acquired enough dust. You gain dust by throwing the artifact at blue breakable objects. The artifact gathers the dust for you, so you don’t need to be able to reach the spot of the breakable object yourself.

While the experience was mostly bug-free, there was one instance where when I tried to load a save-point, the environment didn’t load in. I don’t know if that was a freak accident or if there is something wrong with that area of the game as loading usually worked for me. I was able to get around this bug by loading the start of the most recent act I entered.  The entire game can be completed in 3 to 5 hours if you don’t run into any problems with the puzzles.

Overall, I enjoyed my time with Eclipse: Edge of Light, as such, I think a fair rating for it is 7/10.

Eclipse: Edge of Light is available for Nintendo Switch, Steam, and PlayStation 4.
