Guns, Gore & Cannoli 2 is a platformer shooting game, developed by Crazy Monkey Studio and Claeysbrothers, and published by Crazy Monkey Studio themselves. The game is full of hordes of zombies as well as humans, that the player has to kill. I, myself, have never played the previous game but when I started playing this game, the initial intro scene and the tutorial made me interested in playing it. Guns, Gore & Cannoli 2 also lets you play multiplayer with up to 4 people and lets you select different characters as well.
Guns, Gore & Cannoli 2 is set after the first game itself, where the protagonist, Vinnie Cannoli, is shown captured by some thugs. The story is interesting and the cutscenes are fun to watch as well. I really like the whole execution of the game itself. Guns, Gore & Cannoli 2 takes you initially through fighting thugs and gives you a taste of what you might be encountering in the game. But that is not all, as Vinnie tries to find out who actually had him kidnapped he goes through Thugtown and Quarantine Zone, which introduces zombies as well. The game lets you play with a lot of various weapons and the game has same platformer controls, including double jump and move down through the platforms. The player has melee weapons and can use kick as well to throw the enemies back. And last but not the least roll, which I rarely used except for certain scenarios.
The tough part of the game is the controls including movement and shooting. At least on the Nintendo Switch it is hard to control the character and shoot at the same time, though I was actually able to work the controls out by mid game. The arsenal of weapons includes, pistols, machine gun, rifle, shotgun, rocket launcher and flamethrower as well. For melee, there is a baseball bat provided. The animation of movement and shooting gives the game the fluidity in gameplay. Guns, Gore & Cannoli 2 is full of blood and gore as you kill any enemy you will realize that you just have shattered the enemy into I don’t know how many pieces. Players can literally see the flying pieces of enemy bodies.
Guns, Gore & Cannoli 2 has a few annoying Brute enemies, and not just human brutes but zombie brutes as well. But those are the enemies that make the game worth playing and more challenging. There are about 16 different chapters in the game as well as a lot of different scenarios where you are fighting those enemies, such as town, quarantine zombie area, war zone, forest, and underground tunnels. Each level has either a main boss or a horde of enemies that we fight. The game has save points and life pickups, which really helps a lot during the gameplay.
Other than the overall gameplay, I did notice a few times the animation cutscenes have audio and video not syncing properly as well as some drop in frame rate because of hordes of enemies being spawned. And I believe that this limitation comes from the Nintendo Switch’s hardware itself.
Overall, Guns, Gore & Cannoli 2 is a great and fun game if someone wants a quick gameplay. As the overall game itself is not that long. The game reminds of all classic platformer-shooter games, and a great addition to Switch’s game library. I would give Guns, Gore & Cannoli 2 8 stars out of 10.
