Full disclosure, I’m a huge DC Comics fanboy, and to my surprise, this game, “Justice League: Cosmic Chaos” sort of came out of nowhere for me, but for good or bad, I was excited to check it out. I’m happy to say this is a delightful video game developed by PHL Collective and published by Outright Games (was a little thrown off it wasn’t published by WB Games). It is a dungeon crawling, RPG, DC game that takes place at Happy Harbor, Rhode Island, where in the comics, it was the first headquarters of the Justice League of America location. The game starts with Mr. Mxyzptlk (don’t be upset if you can’t pronounce that, everyone says it differently) unleashing his magic to summon Starro and declaring himself Mayor during Lucas “Snapper” Carr’s mayoral inauguration ceremony. The three playable characters are Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, where you must rescue the rest of the Justice League from alien starfish and save the day.
The game is primarily catered towards kids, with its simple gameplay and childlike, approachable art style. However, even as an adult, I found the game to be a blast with its well-written humor. The animated cutscenes are also beautiful and well-polished, I felt like I was watching a new animated series every time there was a new cinematic. One of the highlights of the game is exploring Happy Harbor to find items such as comic books that unlock different suits for your playable characters and items to upgrade your abilities. As a huge DC Comics fan myself, I appreciated all the small references and easter eggs from the comics. It is evident that the developers put a lot of love into this game, and it was made by fans.
Taking down enemies also has them drop items that can upgrade your abilities, such as Superman’s eye-beams. The game mechanics are simple but great, allowing you to customize your character to your preferred play style. “Justice League: Cosmic Chaos” also offers a two-player mode via couch co-op, making it a more welcoming family experience. In this age of gaming, I feel couch co-op is dying and it’s a real breath of fresh air when a game such as this incorporates it.
“Cosmic Chaos” takes over eight hours to finish, and near the end of the game, I started to feel a bit overpowered, and the difficulty started to become easy and repetitive. However, for kids playing this game, they may be more forgiving than me. For more adult gamers that need a more difficult experience, the game offers five difficulty levels to choose from, with the hardest being “Heroic” mode. Featuring the Justice League members, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman of course, but also The Flash, Aquaman, Green Lantern, and Cyborg. Nolan North, Diedrich Bader, and Vanessa Marshall reprised their roles as Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman who have lent their voices for these characters on many previous DC properties.
Overall, “Justice League: Cosmic Chaos” is an excellent game for kids and DC Comics fans. The game’s humor, cutscenes, and references to the comics make it a must-play for any fan of the Justice League. The map of Happy Harbor is also quite large and surprisingly fun to explore, with several side plot/missions you can discover to add more to your runtime. While the gameplay may become repetitive towards the end, the multiple difficulty levels ensure that adult gamers can still enjoy the game, but let’s face it, this game is for kids and its catered to them, which isn’t a bad thing at all, I think the finished result here will make for a great time. “Justice League: Cosmic Chaos” is a winner of a game that is sure to please any fanboys/fangirls of the DC Comics universe.
8/10
