MORTAL KOMBAT 11 Closed Beta Impressions

MORTAL KOMBAT 11 Closed Beta Impressions

Mortal Kombat 11!!! The game where you can take out your 9 to 5 workplace aggression in the form of gratuitous gore and intense violence. Maybe you’re a long-time fan, or if you just like arcade fighting games, then this is going to be a great game for you.

The Beta let us play as five of the characters on the roster, but each of them stood out. I had the chance to try them all out, and they’re pretty badass. Even Baraka! Previous installments allow players to choose a skin or costume for their fighters, but now we will have access to a variety customization options. Not only do we make our favorite characters look the part, but they can also use specific skill sets (moves) to keep things interesting. For example, Scorpion’s loadout may focus on his “GET OVER HERE” chains and blades signature, or you can be a fiery revenant and raise hellfire. I remember when Deception flirted with the idea with weapon/martial art variations. This concept has only grown and gotten better with Netherrealm Studios. The demo has three loadouts for each character, making each other them essentially 15 different experiences right from the get-go.

I thought it was an interesting choice to disallow the learning aspect of the game, so we just jumped right in and fought our way up the tower. Good exposure to all five original characters. I’m happy to report that it’s not hard to pick up and play, and you feel out the characters quickly. A kick while pushing forward on the left stick might not translate the same way from character to character. Jade will kick downward, whereas Kabal will go for the gut. It makes characters feel like their own, which is a testament to where the game started back in the Midway days. Characters so far have 2 fatalities each, and they are intense! In my opinion, they’re also easier to do. I think this is a recipe to please a large crowd.

Multiplayer is simple, and I can only think it’s fair because everyone who I matched with seemed to know as much (or as little) as I did when it came to character move lists. It’s fast and it’s fun. You can occasionally find something on the stage to use against your combatant, like rubbing someone on a cactus or throwing a chainsaw. And the combat is sort of balanced when you think about the health bars. As health gets lower, you have a chance to go in for a slow-motion grab attack that takes your opponent down a notch. The x-ray attacks also seemingly make random appearances. I like that as opposed to how MK9 handled it, where you had to build up to it. The special grab attacks also seem limited to once per fight.

Those are the major things I was able to see. We receive tokens for our victories, which I assume will be used in the Krypt. Other than that, we don’t see much in the way of story yet. Although, it sounds like Kotal Khan and Jade are an item in this new timeline from the character intros. I’m curious where this is going to go, because I’m hoping for a Smoke return. We will be seeing new and old characters alike, so I’m hopeful for interesting dialogue and decapitations. Until next time, hopefully Earth Realm holds out.

I like to think of myself as the average Joe who grew up alongside video games. I have fun playing strategy games, RPGs, shooters, sandboxes, the whole shebang! Every game provides an experience whether it strikes you as profound, mundane, or someplace in between. I'd like to weigh in my two cents before you spend a single penny.
