MotoGP 18 by Milestone is a motorcycle racing game based on real world motorcycle races and physics. As such, a basic understanding of the mechanics of 2-wheeled vehicles is necessary to do well in this game, knowledge I do not have.
This game has a bit of a learning curve to it, it isn’t the kind of game that you can immediately pick up and play. Even on easy difficulty I was stuck in dead last in part because many things I’m used to in racing games—such as drifting—simply weren’t there (my brother explained that motorcycles aren’t able to drift and as such, made the game more realistic.). My brother—who has played motorcycle racing games before—tried it on easy difficulty and while he wasn’t stuck in dead last, he was never able to breach the top 5. That easy difficulty is so unforgiving of mistakes really soured my opinion of the game.
MotoGP 18 has a great deal of customization. You can pick the appearance of your rider and the motorcycle you use. You can also adjust various settings such as brake strength, spring density, and multiple other fine-tuning adjustments specific to motorcycles that affect performance.
Overall, I found this game very frustrating—mainly because I was incapable of getting out of dead last on easy difficulty, something which was both frustrating and humiliating. Still, the game appears to have everything that comes standard with a motorcycle racing game—including a career mode, a quick match mode, a time attack mode, and a multiplayer mode. As such, I think a fair rating for this game would be 7/10. I would also recommend staying away from the game unless you have basic knowledge of 2-wheeled vehicles and don’t mind losing countless times on the easy difficulty setting to learn the mechanics of the game.
