If you haven’t been living under a rock these last few years, you’ve probably heard of NFTs. NFTs, or Non-Fungible Tokens, have become one of the staples of the recent crypto craze that has hit the mainstream.
With all the industries that have adopted the new technology, the gaming world is one that introduces a massive opportunity for innovation.
But how exactly will NFTs change gaming? Is there such a thing as NFT Gaming? What are NFTs in the first place? That’s what we’re here to find out.

And with that, let’s begin to talk about NFT Gaming.
First and foremost, what are NFTs anyway?
NFTs or Non-fungible tokens are unique digital assets that are not replicable or reproducible. They represent the ownership of a particular thing, whether it’s art, music, or a collectible. All NFTs live on blockchain technology, which is why they’ve become so popular as Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have also started to gain notoriety in the past few years.
How does NFT gaming work then?
Now, there’s no hard and fast rule that determines how NFTs are used in gaming, and, perhaps, this may be its strongest suit against other innovations in the gaming industry. This is because NFT Gaming largely depends on how a particular game developer integrates the technology in their game, making it all the more exciting for the end consumer to learn about how a company has chosen to implement NFTs.
While there is no one way that NFTs are used in games, there are a few notable examples of how they’ve been used in the early stages of NFT gaming. We’ll be discussing some of them now!
- In-game cosmetic items, skins, and costumes as NFTs
A popular implementation of NFTs in gaming is having skins and clothes of in-game characters as NFTs.
What makes this special is that no one NFT is the same (by virtue of it being non-fungible) which makes all the cosmetic items rarer than their ordinary, non-NFT counterpart. This adds a more personalized and individual experience to all gamers out there.
- In-game collectibles as NFTs
In the same vein, completionists and in-game collectors will love NFT gaming because many collectibles are now turned into NFTs. This means that each NFT is unique and distinct, making all these desirable items rare and collectible.
Whether it’s a trophy, an in-game relic, or a powerful weapon – all these NFT collectibles will surely be up for grabs!
- NFTs as the gateway to a more diverse gaming marketplace
NFTs in games allow the introduction of a more diverse and healthy gaming marketplace. As digital assets on the blockchain, NFTs can actually be sold and exchanged for real money (just the same way as crypto coins are exchanged).
Because of this, any NFT in these games could be sold or exchanged in the same way a real item would.
- Characters, pets, and monsters as NFTs
Some games have also made the actual characters, monsters, and pets in their games NFTs. This means that each character is unique. In addition to that, because they are NFTs, they can be sold and exchanged for real value in the marketplace.
This adds a new dimension to how gamers interact with the characters they earn, buy, and play!
- NFTs as a gateway to the metaverse
Last, but definitely not least, NFT gaming is a big step toward making the metaverse a reality. If you haven’t heard of the metaverse, it’s basically a virtual world that mixes both the digital and physical realities we live in today.
Through NFT Gaming, the metaverse will be one step closer to bringing the dream of an all-virtual society to reality since the gaming industry would become a part of the meta-universe as well.
There we have it, those are a few of the ways that NFTs have been or are being used in gaming. As the technology continues to develop, it’s almost a certainty that more creative implementations of NFT gaming will come out. For now, it’s definitely a great time to be a gamer!
