Niffelheim is a 2D side scroller, action-survival game, developed by Ellada Games. The game reminds you of a lot of different mechanics from Survival, Crafting, Dungeon Crawler, and Dark Soul kind of feel.
The 2D art style is based on Norse mythology and looks amazing in the game. The objective in Niffelheim is that when warriors fall in battle, rather than going to Asgard, they are stuck in realm called Niffelheim. The player has to make their way to Asgard by surviving Niffelheim. The overall game setting is a bit dark.
Niffelheim has a lot of game mechanics that players must use to survive and take over neighbor lands, including base building where you have to collect the ingredients and materials to build internal facility like the kitchen, alchemy station, forge and also you can build chests to hold additional materials. You can also keep upgrading your base to be like fortress with upgradable items that players will have to hunt and gather in the wilderness.
We start with a base setup without anything but a chest, a throne, and a mine that you can grab materials from. Players can utilize different tools and weapons for mining, chopping, and battles. Once you move outside the base, you can hunt animals and fight different enemies like skeletons and wolves. There are also dungeons and portal caves available. Dungeons help you with gathering material for better gears and achieving the objectives. If you die in a dungeon, the player’s body is dropped outside of the dungeon and then, as a soul, you have to travel all the way from base to the body’s location to regain everything that you have earned. That specific feature feels very much like Dark soulish.
Each tool and weapon you have has durability that keeps on reducing the more you use it. So whenever going through a dungeon, it is wise to keep an additional pair of weapons and tools with you in case your current weapons break. You have to keep making better gears for survival by going further and exploring the neighboring lands. You can also have opponents setup at the start and players have 4 different classes they can choose from to start with.
Niffelheim has great potential but because of a lot of mechanics that are introduced in the game all at once, it creates confusion and battle mechanics seem a little dull overall. Also, the game is running a little bit laggy on certain movements and does not feel as smooth as it should be.
Overall, Niffelheim is fun and for a while you will enjoy doing the survival, crafting, and dungeon crawling. I will give Niffelheim 7 stars out of 10.
