This is Gaming Cypher’s PC review of first-person puzzle game, The Guest by 505 Games and developers Team Gotham.
Right off the bat you find yourself in a first-class Belmont, Massachusetts hotel room that does not let you leave until you piece together all of the puzzle pieces. You find out by reading magazine and newspaper clips scattered throughout the room that you are a speaker in the University of Boston’s 9th Annual International Scientific Congress. While progressing through rooms, it becomes evident that you are considered a missing person and have been there for quite some time.
I love the fact that straight away, you are doused with many puzzles to solve, some much more challenging than others. What is constant is the creepy feeling that you receive by the background music and the spooky environment. I actually found myself breathing a sigh of relief each time that I figured out how to turn on the lights! There are many clues scattered throughout each area that enable you to make sense of all the objects that you find and keep in your inventory. Some you get to use, some you read for clues, and some objects get combined. It is prudent to make sure that your observation skills are heightened or else you will miss important clues that will enable you to progress.
I appreciated how the game’s enjoyable yet constantly spooky narrative weaved right into the exploration and actually made a lot of sense. I felt like I was in a haunted house and had to constantly look around me, especially while entering dark areas. I actually hesitated before entering dark rooms not being sure if I was going to be mauled to death. As I progressed through the levels, I began to understand more and more as to why I was locked in the hotel room and was rewarded by several worthwhile elements that I will not disclose.
There was only one glitch worth mentioning and that is every time that I tried to quit the game, the screen froze and I had to Task Manager my way out of it. Other than that. The Guest had no glitches, ran smoothly, saved quickly each time that I wanted it to and was highly enjoyable.
I want to give kudos to Team Gotham for creating such a wonderfully stimulating, challenging and FUN first-person puzzler. It is hard to believe that it’s their first game so job well done!
I definitely recommend a BUY and give The Guest a 4.5/5
