POWER RANGERS: Battle for the Grid Review for Xbox One

In August of 1998, Haim Saban introduced America to the Power Rangers. A team of 5 teenagers given the ability to… Actually, even if you weren’t a fan, you inevitably know who the Power Rangers are. The show became a cultural phenomenon as soon as it hit American airwaves and is now enjoying its 26th season on TV along with three trips to the silver screen. With original audiences growing up, a recent movie, and a successful comic book run, Power Rangers is having a bit of a renaissance and POWER RANGERS: Battle for the Grid is no exception. This game offers the fun of Power Rangers technology in a tried and true format that’s easy to play for hours.

Battle for the Grid utilizes Power Rangers characters in a fighting game that includes all the weapons and megazords you could want. In a universe where an alternate version of the Green/White ranger Tommy Oliver remains evil instead of breaking Rita Repulsa’s grip on him, Tommy rises to power as Lord Drakkon and travels through the timelines of Power Rangers to gather morphers for his army and take over the Universe. The story starts when he travels back to the Mighty Morphin days to start his conquest where it began. Throughout the story, you have the chance to fight as rangers on either side as one side works to conquer the Universe and the other struggles to keep the power of the morphing grid from falling into the wrong hands. Fighting games usually struggle mightily with story since that’s typically not the emphasis of the game, but nWay did a fantastic job of creating a compelling Power Rangers story that feels true to the iconic shows the game is based on.

In addition to the story mode, there’s also an arcade mode where you pick a team and take on random game generated teams and an online mode where you can battle players from all over the world. Every game mode was excellent, but my favorite was online play. Every character had a number of different combinations, but they maintained a common button combination across characters. This made it very easy to use a variety of characters and succeed with any of the roster of rangers. So far, there is a roster of 18 rangers through season 2 including the likes of the Quantum Ranger, the gold Zeo Ranger, and my personal favorite the Magna Defender. My only complaint about Battle for the Grid is just that the game isn’t long enough yet and I would like to see a larger roster of rangers, but nWay seems to be working on that with the addition of a season 2 that added a few characters to the roster.

Overall, POWER RANGERS: Battle for the Grid was an absolute blast to play. I grew up loving the Power Rangers franchise and Battle for the Grid offered a very fun way to reconnect with the franchise. However, this game isn’t only for fans of Power Rangers. Battle for the Grid offers a fun take on fighting games with easy to use combinations and very entertaining animations that will appeal to anyone who enjoys the fighting games genre. Whether you grew up with Power Rangers of you just enjoy an entertaining fighting game, this game is definitely worth adding to your Xbox One collection.

My first console was the original Playstation and I would play Twisted Metal every now and then but games didn't hook me until I played the original Halo at my friend's house. As soon as I picked up that controller, I knew I needed an Xbox and I had to have that game. Since those early Halo days, I've branched out and played any game I could find with a great story and memorable characters but Master Chief is still my favorite. @thenotoriousTGT on Twitter
