The appeal of multiplayer party games comes in the shape of several specific categories. Can the game be played and understood by anyone, how much variety does the game offer, how many can play, and how enjoyable each game is. PUI PUI MOLCAR Let’s! MOLCAR PARTY! excels in some of these areas while falling short in others. At first, unlocking new buildings and new molcars will be explained through tutorials as well as playing party games. When played alone, each party game can be unlocked within roughly one hour depending on the individual’s goals. Pui Pui Molcars offers 10 different games to be enjoyed with up to four players. The variety of games ranges from hitting beats at the right time, to racing, even one involving avoiding zombies. Each game has rules and controls that are simple and in some cases even adjustable to meet each person’s preference. Outside of just party games, Pui Pui Molcars offers customization of the molcars and a fairly extensive character roster for players to choose from. Though I will note this character roster is purely visual and offers no advantage or unique ability, unless visual differences are a special ability in one’s playstyle.
Though the opportunity to enjoy this game with friends did not appear during my playtesting, the appeal is certainly there. The simple games and instructions allow for anyone to pick up a controller and jump in. Some games do offer more replayability than others, however, with a standout during my session being an obstacle course race towards a crown. If this sounds familiar it is likely because the inspiration from other party games is present within Pui Pui Molcar. Obstacle courses may not be new but there is something to be said about the cuteness of each molcar jumping over objects and through a ball pit that in itself offers entertainment. Thanks to the variety of games, even though I enjoyed some and not others meant that I could simply stick to the options I do enjoy during each session. In this way, each game does at least offer a minimal amount of enjoyment on a spectrum which satiates most players in some way.
The shortcomings mentioned above come from a certain amount of lag on the Nintendo Switch system that impacts the minigames. At first, these lag spikes appeared only during the game’s autosave function. Unfortunately, as more games are unlocked it seems these spikes began appearing during minigames as well. As you can already imagine this has a fairly significant impact on how well a player can do, especially during rhythm based games. Should the developers implement an update for this, the game would benefit greatly. Though it may not earn the sizable following that fighting games offer or the replayability of more established party games, Pui Pui Molcar does offer something just different enough to be worth trying. At the very least, this game will certainly surprise a group during game night and offer a break from overly competitive alternatives out there. Overall, the best I can rate this game currently is 6/10 with space for improvement.
