This is the review for the Windows PC version of Randal’s Monday, developed by the Spanish team Nexus Game Studios and published by Daedalic Entertainment .
The developers describe Randal’s Monday as “the classic point & click gameplay and countless items and nods toward the golden age of geek culture deliver precious nostalgia to all players who hold their childhood memories and heroes dear. Retro-consoles? Favorite flicks, shows and games from the 80s, 90s, and the early 2k? Randal’s Monday has all of that and it’s truly worth your time to find each and every reference made in this game.”
Graphics
Randall’s Monday has cartoon-like graphics. The colors are pleasing and the game makes you feel as though you are watching a TV sitcom. The cartoonish style also adds to the comical overtones of the game. The subtitles for the dialogue are easy to read, and the interactive items within the game are easy to spot. We gave the graphics a 5 / 5.
Sound
The voice acting in the game is great, with characters having a lot of personality and the voices really matching the design of the characters. There is usually pleasant background music along with city sounds whenever the player is outside. The audio of the game creates an immersive feeling for players, and allows them to almost experience the emotions that Randal would be feeling. We gave the sound a 5 / 5.
Gameplay
The gameplay of Randal’s Monday is basically point and click as you take Randall through his day. We felt that the puzzles were actually very challenging and fun to solve while Randall was visiting fictitious Chicago locations. One thing about the storyline, though, is that it made us feel as though sometimes it just didn’t come together. Some actions were just too random and didn’t seem to fit with the story. For example in order to lower a ladder from a hook, the player is required to take a hanger with a duck on it and attach it to a broom. Actions like these forced us to use the hint system, which “kills a cat” every time it is used! The overall feel of the game is very comical, yet because of these very hard to figure out actions, we gave the gameplay a 4 / 5.
Controls
Since this is a point and click game, the controls pretty much speak for themselves – just point and click or spacebar to make conversations go faster. We gave the controls a 5 / 5.
