I am not a big fan of racing games, mostly because I am terrible at them (I spent a fair time trying to pass the first trial), but I have to admit – Ride 4 changed my perspective for the genre. Developed by Milestone, Ride 4 stands out as one of the best at its genre for the motorcycle fans. With its adjustable difficulty, you can enjoy the game no matter your experience in the genre.
After passing the first test, you are provided with 3 options. You can start your career in European, Asian, or American league and race in the real world tracks. Once you choose, you are free to experience the game however you want. If you want to pursue the career path, you are required to get the license of the region by completing several challenges. Personally, I first wanted to see myself how I would do in a regular race.
My first race was full of accidents; sometimes I crashed my bike into the wall for not being prepared for the turn or got blocked by another bike and created a chain reaction, and while all of these things were happening, my brother was laughing behind me. What he didn’t know was that I could adjust the difficulty to fit my skill level. I decreased the difficulty level of the drivers, altering the principles of physics (all of a sudden I stopped tripping over while taking turns) and even turned on automated brakes for sharp turns. It still didn’t turn the game on “easy mode” but at least I wasn’t the last one. After playing a couple of games, I saved some credits and explored the shop.
In order to get better in races, you can look at the options to upgrade your bike. You can choose a new sponsor and get a new bike or upgrade the one you already have. Because there are over 100 sponsors to choose from, each sponsor having their own base model, you might want to stay away from that option due to high prices and abundance of choices, and buy some upgrades for your current bike. When I first upgraded my bike, I could finally finish the race at top 5. The difference was immense.
With the morale boost I had, I started working my way up in the career section. You are required to complete several challenges. At first look, these challenges seemed like a laborious task but each challenge allows you to see what you might be doing wrong. Personally I could better predict where to start turning and use brakes, the optimal speed for turns and overall mastery of the track. For experienced players these challenges would probably not even be considered as a challenge but for me they were a great opportunity to improve. Meanwhile I continued racing to save up more credits and eventually started playing in default difficulty – I still kept the automated brakes, they are a blessing. After getting your licence, you can start racing in the league and unlock rewards by completing the races.
If you are a casual gamer to do a couple of races and cool tricks or a serious gamer who is looking for a motorcycle game with the most realistic physics and challenges, Ride 4 provides a fun experience for both groups. Thanks to the difficulty curve of the game there is always something to keep you on your toes; when you select the “realistic” physics, you really understand the true difficulty of the game. The built in experience system allows you to get special deals with the sponsor, as you complete each race or challenge your affinity with your sponsor increases. There are also challenge modes, namely endurance mod, increases the playability of the game a lot.
If a new player like me could enjoy it, a bike fan will definitely make the most out of Ride 4.
