After a long wait, publisher and developer KOEI TECMO America has finally brought back the amazing Samurai Warriors series with Samurai Warriors 5, which is set in the Sengoku era of Japan.
Samurai Warriors 5 is a re-imagining of the series. Gameplay for Samurai Warriors 5 follows the story of Nobunaga Oda. The graphics and art seem to be more refined and fluid. The combat is a great plus factor for the game. Overall, there are a few modes you can start the game in, that includes initially the Story Mode, which lets you play through the levels and complete the objectives. A second mode is the Citadel mode, which is more like tower defense.
Story mode of Samurai Warriors 5 lets you play through the story of Nobunaga Oda and his allies. At the start of each mission, the game will let player setup the equipment, upgrades, and skills assignment. Also, it gives insight of the map and provides you location of each enemy characters. Each level has some provided quests and some hidden/bonus quests that lets you earn some additional rewards as you explore the map. Citadel mode provides tower defense, and seems like a bit opposite of what Story mode is, and also provides upgrade to other facilities in each mode.
The combat is a bit different this time around where players will have 2 different attacks, heavy and normal attack and provides additional skills that are assigned to the different slots and can be used again after the cooldown. In addition, they can use the combination of attacks to get the kills and achieve the combos throughout the map. Also, there are some amazing Musou attacks that player can perform, and then there are Rage attacks.
In terms of character upgrades, after completing each level, players are provided with some XP scrolls for weapons and playable characters. Each upgrade provides some additional stats and the players get skill points that can be used to unlock skill tree.
There are multiple characters that can be unlocked after playing the story mode, which have different skills and weapon types. This gives the game some fun and provides different gameplay styles. There are multiple playable characters that have a bonding stat when played together, and provides additional effects when used in a single game together in Citadel mode.
In conclusion, Samurai Warriors 5 looks and plays great, and has multiple variety of skills and gameplay to be provided. The only thing that keeps the experience from getting great to greatest is that over time, the battlefield seems repetitive. But on the positive side, there are some amazing visuals and great combos and different characters that provide an amazing hack and slash experience. I would rate Samurai Warriors 5 8 stars.
