Flying through space, battling dangerous enemies, and completing missions to rescue your captain: Starlink: Battle for Atlas is Ubisoft’s new action-adventure game for the Nintendo Switch that will leave you mesmerized by the graphics and hooked on the storyline. As players fearlessly navigate their way through space to find their missing captain, they will encounter unforgivable villains and lethal missions. So, if they’re willing to take the journey, this might be the ride for them.

The story centers itself around the abduction of the Equinox captain, St. Grand. As players venture into space a cut-scene will show their fearless leader ripped from the ship and taken into the deep depths of space by an unknown force. For the remainder of the game players work to repair the Equinox, attempt to find their missing captain, and seek revenge on the Legion who are surely behind this. Using some reliable allies and some surely recognizable faces, players search the galaxy for their missing leader and confront some dangerous forces along the way.

If the storyline isn’t enough to hook the player, the graphics will surely suck them into Ubisoft’s beautifully crafted vortex of space. The colorful illustrations in Starlink: Battle for Atlas will leave players breathless. The attention to detail, captivating color-scheme, and radiating designs created a truly out-of-this-world effect. The juxtapositions between light and dark, which signify the good and bad of space, are somewhat cliché. Luckily, the use of this is quite effective! Falling into the blanket of darkness when approaching an Extractor adds an especially eerie grueling effect to the playing experience.

The unique pilot selection will leave players baffled by the realism and nostalgic by the presence of some old faces. While selecting a pilot, the player will have the unique opportunity to view personality traits and special characteristics. This interesting addition makes every pilot relevant to the plot in an inclusive way. As players progress through the game they can upgrade their pilot’s skills and add additional features to their ships as well which will improve their strength in battle.  So, when choosing your pilot in the beginning take time to read about them -it may pay off later.

STARLINK: BATTLE FOR ATLAS Review for Nintendo Switch

Despite the easy-to-navigate control screens which were detailed and transparent, I was very let down by the overall functionality of Starlink: Battle for Atlas. Although the expectation for Nintendo Switch is not going to be one hundred percent steady, I found the controls for both flying and battle difficult and overly-sensitive. Even after hours of playing, modifying my ship, and filtering through different aircrafts which offer a variety of handling, I was displeased with the experience. For a game so reliant on flight, Ubisoft has really dropped the ball on this one.

If you’ve been craving an adventure game, Starlink: Battle for Atlas spares no time satisfying a hunger for just that! Without a doubt, players will feel overcome by adrenaline and warfare as they venture through the galaxy and fight against foes. The poorly-designed controls are a downfall but there is no doubt the storyline and graphics will keep players captivated enough to dismiss this fault. If you’re brave enough, try your best and see if you can beat the Legion and bring your captain home.

Score: 8

My name is Haylee, but everyone calls me "Haylz". Gaming has been a passion of mine since my grandma bought me The Sims for PC and my love for gaming flourished from there. Currently, I'm a Senior studying English at Texas A&M University- Corpus Christi and spend most of my time gaming and leading my school through collegiate competitions as President of the eSports club! Despite being a dedicated vegetarian, my favorite games tend to be First Person Shooters and I'm naturally drawn to blood and gore! Chances are, if you can kill in it, I'll play it... I just won't eat it (unless it's a Fallout perk)!
