Suicide Guy by Chubby Pixel is a game which asks, “What is your worst nightmare?” Is it being chased by the undead with voracious appetites? Is it walking into work in your underwear? Or, is it running out of your coffee supply after a particularly grueling day at work?
Well, according to our bearded, heavy set protagonist, it is falling asleep on a particularly lazy day of watching TV on the couch and letting your beer drop to the floor! The horror!
So how do you prevent such a nightmarish situation from occurring? Simple, you have to scare yourself awake with even worse nightmares to wake you up and prevent this tragic beer loss situation. Have you ever had a bad dream where you fall from a great height, get eaten by a T-Rex or get hit by a speeding train? That is what Suicide Guy tasks you to perform – to get yourself killed in various ways through a swathe of unique levels, with many pop-culture shout outs abound. Do not let the title fool you – this is not a psychological or serious game about the unfortunate act of suicide – it is a more lighthearted, goofy puzzle and first-person platformer.
The level designs ranges from basic spots like factories with forklifts, to the aforementioned parodies of pop culture. One level was a shout out to Raiders of the Lost Ark, with the golden idol, Ark of the Covenant, and Dr. Jones’ skeletal head with fedora all present. Other such levels featured shout outs to Valve’s Portal series, Nintendo’s Mario, Jurassic Park (remember that T-Rex I mentioned? She is NOT happy with what you do to her egg!), and many more. The game contains 24 base levels and includes three bonus levels from post-release – one expanded level that contains many of the challenges of the various levels combined into one mega level, and two holiday themed levels for the Halloween and Christmas season. All of them have a great sense of humor to them one way or another, and if I had to name a particular favorite that I laughed at, it was the Christmas one, but to say anymore would ruin the experience.
The gameplay is just as expected for a first-person puzzle game – you can run, jump, crawl, and grab and use items on your way to killing yourself/waking yourself up. The gameplay and the graphics all run smooth, and if there is anything to complain about, it is just some of the minor graphical glitches with the physics engine, nothing major. If anything catastrophic or annoying does occur, the developer wisely put in a “restart level” button to rectify the situation. I think in all the time I spent with the game, this only happened once or twice at best.
Suicide Guy is a fun and hilarious puzzle adventure. You will most likely be able to get through all the game has to offer in just a few short hours, but for its low asking price of $2.50 on sale, you get an excellent game for an excellent deal. If you have an interest in brain-teasers, comedy, and great puzzles, Fabio Ferrarra’s Suicide Guy, and its recent sequel, Suicide Guy: Sleepin’ Deeply are definitely worth checking out!

PC Review
Your local neighborhood nutjob, gamer, and teacher! I'm an avid fan of many genres such as platformers, shooters, horror, etc. I am also an avid tabletop gamer - hugely into the worlds of Warhammer and all of their spinoffs. I'm a big believer in being objective - even if something is not my cup of tea, I want to talk about it on the objective level - is it well made, crafted with love, and with care for the fans? If so, that's a good game in my book for someone and well worth their hard earned dollarydoos!
