Can’t choose what game you want to play? Play SuperMash! Developed and published by Digital Continue, SuperMash combines iconic genres to create unique gaming experiences. This magical game console was originally discovered by you, as you’re working as an independent video game store clerk. It spews out retro games, of which you can choose to mash together any of these genres: JRPG, Metrovania, Action Adventure, Platformer, Stealth, and Shoot ‘Em Up.
You can only mash two genres together at a time, but every mash up that you choose will still be completely random, including the name of the game, the gameplay itself, and there are also glitches and bugs inserted into games randomly to simulate retro gameplay. There’s also an option to create a “Quick Mash,” where the game makes a choice for you. It’s a pretty neat tool, but I didn’t think it was as much fun as choosing which genres to mash on my own. Every time you play SuperMash, its system creates a unique game play tailored specifically to your choices. Even if you choose to mash the same genres several times in a row, it will be a new game every time. Even the soundtrack combines game genres and gives it more of a “retro feel.” SuperMash is the ultimate throwback game, with some modern twists that make it almost impossible to stop playing. But why would you want to?!
A goal is presented at the beginning of each game. Seems simple enough, right? Reach the objective, and you win. But there are different obstacles and glitches in each game; you never know what kind of situation you’ll be thrown into. The genre masher can and will throw you for loops. You are able to choose the difficulty as well as the length of the game. At the end of the game, if you successfully complete the objective, you’re rewarded with three Dev Cards, which you can use to customize elements of each and every Mash, including, but not limited to, enemies, players, environments, and the mechanics of the game itself. You only get them if you win though.
Some objectives are a lot easier to obtain than others. I can say I died a lot in most of the Mashes that I made. It was fun though, and I wasn’t that upset, because all of the Mashes that I played kept me interested and I could play this game for hours and not get bored. It’s several games in one, and the possibilities are endless! However, because there are so many possibilities, it does tend to do more harm than good in places where glitches are purposely infused into the game, and the goals, are sometimes “too” simple.
SuperMash is better played with a physical controller, as told on one of the introduction screens, but I did just fine playing with a keyboard and mouse on my PC. You can also share each Mash’s unique code with friends or streamers to challenge them and see if they can finish a Mash that you couldn’t, and vice versa. Beat their “impossible” Mashes.
I’m giving this game a score of 8 out of 10.

Steam Review
I am an army veteran and currently a sophomore at Portland State University majoring in English. I have always looked to gaming as an outlet outside of my everyday life and a way to experiment with playing different types of games and take on new and exciting characters with different backgrounds. It's kind of like getting to become a new person every time you play a game.
