Tailside: Cozy Cafe Sim is a nice relaxing game by developer and publisher Coffee Beans Dev, and from all the rush and excitement from the modern world this is a game that allows the player to just relax. Moreover, this game is a passion project by Coffee Beans Dev as the sole developer and publisher of the game which says a lot about this individual. From the demo of the game, it honestly feels committed and focused on providing a relaxing game experience for the player and wants them to slow down. The art style for the game is in retro styled graphics reminiscent of games like Drawn to Life, Locks Quest, and Stardew Valley and utilizing a soft color palette to make the game easier on the eyes. This allows the game to immerse the player in a more relaxing atmosphere which is the main focus of the game.
The basic gameplay is mostly centered around making coffee and various types as well such as espresso, Macchiato, and latte art. Moreover, in the demo while not being a finalized product for the final game the removal of a timer allowing the player to go at their own pace is such a nice quality of life allowing the player to just focus on themselves. This creates makes the state of the game always in the player’s control and allows them too just slow down, and focus on playing the game at a decelerated rate. By making the player slow down, it allows them to be more grounded and makes the game have a therapeutic like quality to the game. Aside from that, the player has full customization in how they want to decorate their café down to small details that allows for a greater depth of player agency.
Aside from the gameplay, the overall look of the game feels very retro and focuses on a calm color palette. This doubles down on a calm and relaxing atmosphere and ensures that the player’s eyes are not overwhelmed in the slightest. Moreover, this fits into the relaxing café aesthetic the game is focused on alongside the retro styled graphics. These graphics are reminiscent of those bit themed graphic games on the Nintendo DS and Game Boy SP so there is a familiar aura of nostalgia. This nostalgic feeling offers a sense of familiarity.
Tailside: Cozy Cafe Sim is a relaxing game through the through and this is purely evident in how the game is made. This game is mainly focused towards those who want a break from the stresses of life and just wind down after a long day from work. Moreover, this mindset in development stems from the fact the developer Coffee Beans on X said how they put their, “heart into creating this cozy experience” (CofeeBeans). This passion is a great characteristic and is necessary when developing a game as the player needs to feel the emotion a developer wants the player to experience. By doing so allows for a greater experience in the long run in the game’s life cycle. Moreover, this game is a solid choice for anyone who just wants to relax after a busy day at work, school, or in need of a break and just focus on themselves.
