Originally released last year on Mac and PC, The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk: The Amulet of Chaos has made its way to consoles in this Chicken Edition. I was very curious about this take on the RPG genre, adding a comedic-parody tone. Little did I know that this IP was a French comedic audio series, created by comedians and musicians all the way back in the very early 2000s. There have also been books and comics adapted from this series. Clearly, The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk (I still struggle pronouncing that name) has an audience, even if most of them aren’t in the United States… Yet.
The story brings us to a rag tag group of heroes that range from different race and classes, all of them together are seeking the Amulet of Chaos. Right off the bat, the amulet is found, but unfortunately has cursed them all. Now we must travel through several floors of a dungeon to find a way to lift this curse, in comedic fashion no less. This game has a strong, well-rounded group of varying player types you can experiment with. From the Ranger, who is essentially the party leader, to the Elf, who is used for long range bow attacks. Personally, I was very fond of the very powerful Barbarian and the tank-like Dwarf. It was strange to me that these playable characters don’t have names, they are always referred to by either their race or class. Needless to say, the characters themselves are still great and voiced very well.
Exploring these dungeons are quite fun, there is a lot to find, such as: shortcuts, shops, enemy hideouts, taverns, as well as secret doors to find loot and collectibles. The combat system can be commonly compared to the likes of an XCOM or Final Fantasy Tactics type of game. Strategy is very much needed, but also a good amount of luck. While I found this game to be easy in some areas, it was very difficult in others. Going from room to room, I was kept on my toes, due to the difficulty feeling very random and I could have my team completely wiped out at any turn. Fortunately, the gameplay is fun enough to where I didn’t mind some trial and error, experimentation is encouraged.
As far as the comedy elements are concerned, it was a bit of hit and miss with me. The game and characters are very self-aware and often like to make random pop culture references and even break the fourth wall. While all that is well and good, it began to be a little bit too much. There also seemed to be a heavy reliance on saying the F word, perhaps too frequently. Comedy is of course subjective so I won’t knock it too much, but maybe I’m being more of a prude at my older age, because I’m sure if I was playing this as a kid, I probably would have thought this was the funniest, edgiest thing I’ve seen.
Playing The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk: The Amulet of Chaos Chicken Edition on Nintendo Switch comes with its usual pros and cons. Having access to a turn base tactical game on-the-go I can see being a very appealing way of playing this genre. What is starting to become more and more noticeable is the Switch’s capabilities for current games. The graphics and resolution are turned down so much that it’s nowhere near as good as it is on PC or even other console versions. It can also be a bit glitchy and still drop frames here and there. Having said all this, it really amounts to how you want to play this genre of game. Even with all of the Switch’s shortcomings, I still believe it’s my preferred place to play. 7/10

Nintendo Switch Review
Gaming since I was given an original Nintendo as a kid. I love great storytelling and unique ingenuity. When both collide in a single game, I'm a happy gamer. Twitter/IG @NickNavarro87
