In a world where the humans have long since died and robots have populated the land, you would think that everything would be more orderly and peaceful. Unfortunately, the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree as it looks like even robots go through essential crises. They drink “alcohol”, have tedious day jobs, fall into nihilistic despair, and even start cults. You can’t get much more human than that! Developed by Tanuki Game Studio and published by Neon Doctrine, The Library of Babel, will have players sneaking and exploring with their robotic character, Ludovik in a labyrinth-like 2-D environment. Filled with amazing scenes of urban decay and fascinating storytelling, this new upcoming stealth platformer will keep you hooked for hours.
Ludovik is a seeker. His occupation requires him to be both a messenger, investigator, and a spy. This also means that he is not a fighter and will not be able to defend himself or attack any enemies he encounters. Instead, he relies on his stealth, speed, and the handy ability to parkour onto any ledge with a grip. Luckily if he does get zapped to bits, Ludovik can respawn at the most recent saved link. It’s not just guns that players will have to worry about, as the many areas are also full of hazardous traps and hungry predators that are not afraid to nibble on a metal keister. Yes, Ludovik won’t have to worry about getting any cuts or bruises but falling into a spiked pit is a guaranteed Blue Screen of Death.
The maps in The Library of Babel are extensive and intricate. Be prepared to keep a keen eye on the surroundings as there are many hidden tunnels where clues and valuables can be found. Finding and combining found objects is a key gameplay feature so even what may look like trash can come in handy later. However, the most challenging aspect of this puzzle game is the leap and catch mechanic. It’s finicky and there are many instances where it looks like an easy jump and grab, except the latter doesn’t always happen and Ludovik is soon plummeting to his death.
All in all, The Library of Babel has all the addicting and frustrating qualities of a great platformer. At times there’s that adrenaline rush when you find that hidden entrance, or when that difficult puzzle is solved. Then there’s those moments your seconds away from rage quitting because Ludovik suddenly developed butterfingers and can’t hold onto anything. Luckily, the intriguing mystery and plot is powerful enough to smother the frustration and motivate players to keep coming back for more punishment. So, travel quickly and quietly, keep to the shadows, and most importantly, get ready to hang on for dear life.
PROS: Fascinating and captivating plot, soundtrack, and art style
CONS: Game mechanics at times seem particular as the grip doesn’t always catch on the ledge.
SCORE: 7/10
The Library of Babel is now available for purchase on Windows PC via Steam (and is Steam Deck Verified), Mac, Xbox One and Series X|S, PlayStation 4|5, and Nintendo Switch.

Video games have always been a huge influence in my life and have definitely shaped me to who I am today . Some of my best memories growing up were the many adventures and stories I was able to experience and become immersed in. If my hands aren't either covered in clay, typing, editing, creating, or helping shoving food in my mouth, they would either be gripped to a controller, tapping away at the screen of my phone, or clicking away on my PC. I am always up for trying something new because why live just one life when you can live many.
