Dicefolk Review for Steam

Get ready, set…and ROLL! In a world full of unique creatures, loot, and powerful artifacts, there’s nothing stopping you from becoming the best chimera summoner in all the lands. Developed by LEAP Game Studios and Tiny Ghoul and produced by Good Shepherd Entertainment, this turn-base roguelike game utilizes a dice system to determine your moves. No two plays will be exactly the same in Dicefolk and players will need to re-strategize with each new round. Unfortunately, defeat is to be expected in the first few plays, however this just means that you will come back kicking even stronger and smarter.

Dicefolk Review for Steam

There’s no character modification as there is just one default chimera summoner to play as. Instead, the customization will be with all the many different chimeras to find and add to your team, each with their own special skill set. These helpful creatures look reminiscent of the nostalgic 90s anime such as Pokemon or Digimon, and equally cute to boot.  At first, three chimeras are automatically assigned to your team, but this isn’t set in stone as there are many scattered through the map. You can find new ones at chimera statues or with another summoner. Not every chimera that you come across needs to be added to your team and only chose what you think would fit best to your battle tactics. Artifacts can also be found or bought, and later added to your chimeras to boost or even give them a new set of abilities to use.

As the name suggests, dice are a key component in how players battle with other chimeras. Not only will the dice roll give options on how you will play your round, but you will also get the option of how to control your opponent’s next move. This doesn’t mean it will make the battles any easier as attacks will still happen. Players will instead have to factor in how they can withstand the damage the enemy inflicts. Between figuring how to rotate the team, the enemy’s team, what moves to make, and who will move first, it is a big juggling act. Not only that, but the dice are also shuffled with each play which means that not every move will be one in your exact favor.

This is a good casual game where players can jump in at anytime to play without needing to remember a specific storyline or quest, they need to accomplish. Dicefolk has great re-playability as each game will be different with its many chimeras, dice options, and battle styles. The game mechanics are not difficult and easy to get into the flow of how to best customize your team. The only area that could be changed for a better experience is if players can also have the option to sell their many items that they would eventually collect.

Dicefolk will launch for PC via Steam on February 27, 2024. You can play the free demo right now.

Video games have always been a huge influence in my life and have definitely shaped me to who I am today . Some of my best memories growing up were the many adventures and stories I was able to experience and become immersed in. If my hands aren't either covered in clay, typing, editing, creating, or helping shoving food in my mouth, they would either be gripped to a controller, tapping away at the screen of my phone, or clicking away on my PC. I am always up for trying something new because why live just one life when you can live many.
