Tools Up! Renovation Spree Bundle Review for Nintendo Switch

Tools Up! Renovation Spree Bundle Review for Nintendo Switch

Tools Up! Renovation Spree Bundle is a game developed by ALL IN! GAMES, the same makers as OverCooked, (Check Out Our Xbox Review!) is a co-op apartment renovation game. Join with up to three players and to do messy renovations for apartments. If you’re familiar with OverCooked, the gameplay will feel similar as it is designed to be played with friends rather than alone. You are given tasks to perform under a timer to do renovations such as painting walls, laying down carpet, and cleaning up garbage within each apartment. You and your co-op teammates must communicate in order to optimally complete the tasks and earn enough stars.

Instructions for Tools Up! itself feel very confusing, as the developers do not immediately tell you what to do, but they show you small clues on how to proceed. It’s very visual, and almost doesn’t feel like a tutorial at all when learning new skills. This can cause a lot of confusion for those who have never played OverCooked or are trying out this game for the first time. The controls for the game are simple when looking at the photos of the controls, however, the gameplay itself is clunky and not as intuitive as you may think. It’s hard to manage the game when you need to pick up the blueprint again, while also attempting to complete the tasks needed on the blueprint. The hit boxes within the game are also very finicky. Sometimes you will feel like you’re not going to knock over the can of paint, but your character will still manage to knock it over. Or, the door will not open or you’ll press a wrong control and break it as well. Even picking up objects in close proximity causes confusion as you may pick up the wrong one when you meant to pick up the other, resulting in wasted time.

Tools Up! has an interesting premise, and it had the potential to be as good as OverCooked. I liked the idea of having a party game where you renovate apartments instead of cooking recipes for restaurants. However, it does not match up to it. The controls are not as responsive or intuitive, and you’ll find yourself making more mistakes than completing the tasks at hand more than you mean to. I personally did not enjoy this game as much as I’d have liked to, and I would rather prefer to play OverCooked instead. The controls and gameplay were too confusing and it just felt clunky as a whole. If you’re after an alternative for OverCooked though, Tools Up! may be enough even though it does not match up to it.

I really love playing video games! Growing up, my dad introduced me to video games, the first being Street Fighter. I have always been surrounded by them growing up and even now. They really impacted my life allowing me to share this commonality with my friends and new ones. I play a wide array of games, mostly PC, but sometimes PS4 and Nintendo Switch. Some of my favorite games are Final Fantasy VII, League of Legends, Persona 5, and Stardew Valley. As of recent, I've been playing Fall Guys and Among Us as well!
