Developer We’re Five Game’s and publisher tinyBuild’s Totally Reliable Delivery Service (via Epic Games Store) is an indie, ragdoll simulation about terrible delivery couriers and a world of odd machinery and distractions. Single player or co-op, players must work with “unpredictable ragdoll physics” to deliver packages with as little harm done possible to the packages or themselves.
Sound
Pros:
- Sound is perhaps the best aspect of the entire game. The soundtrack fits with the funky vibe intended for ragdoll stimulated deliveries.
Cons:
- None
Graphics
Pros:
- Graphics are fairly good; a lot of vibrancy and movement well designed within the mechanics of the game. There is not a ton of detail, as everything is quite boxlike (aside from the rag doll characters), so there is not much to expect.
Cons:
- Pretty ill-rendered mechanics when the player attempts to interact with any moving means of transportation or when delivering items. Several times my poor, little ragdoll character would be somewhere lost in the metal of a forklift or part way stuck inside a delivery box.
The graphical nature of the game may not be suited for players who get dizzy easily. After half an hour into the game, I had to take a break, as the over fluidity of the gameplay mechanics and movement were starting to make me dizzy and quite nauseous.
Plot
Pros:
- The entire objective of the game is cute and straightforward. One or more players have a nice time playing ragdoll characters with each other while crashing into things with vehicles.
- There are side distractions for players to play with when taking a break from performing deliveries, such as playing with toys and the various machinery used for deliveries.
Cons:
- One could say that despite the package deliveries varying in difficulties and the distractions, very quickly does it become monotonous and almost tedious. Eventually, players may just fool around endlessly with vehicles they’ve acquired, and crash into everything until the entire concept is tired.
Gameplay
Pros:
- Controls are fairly simple, though can be a little confusing at first. Controls are a combination of the mouse and keyboard keys, with the main ones being used the WASD and Q, E, and space keys. Players will be reminded of gameplay controls a lot, so if they are difficult to obtain at first, it gradually becomes easier.
- Characters are customizable right away, which adds a little extra personable flair to delivery making.
- The entire mechanics of the game is quite hilarious, as the impossible physics of it all just results in a bunch of noodly chaos ensuing at every possible time and place. One cannot help but partake in the anarchic nature of it all.
Cons:
- The noodly physics of the game, like aforementioned, gets a bit tiring and sometimes dizzying to watch after a certain period of time.
- For generally over-serious gamers like myself, not being able to complete package deliveries properly because of the entire terrible physics of it all becomes frustrating, despite that being the point of the game. The ragdolls get knocked out or knocked over far too easily.
- Distractions that are available are fun and quite ridiculous, though like everything else, their allure is based on the physics of it being terrible and crazy, which gets quite old quickly.
Reviewer’s Opinion
Perhaps ragdoll stimulations such as Totally Reliable Delivery Service are not my cup of tea, but I can’t say that I enjoyed it long enough for it to be worth playing again purely for my own entertainment. I can certainly see some gamers who would enjoy the novelty of it all, but I cannot see it building much more of a name for itself otherwise.
