Trophy, developed by 8-bit legit, is a 2d platformer/shooter. This game calls back to old arcade graphics and gameplay to give players a sense of nostalgia. In this game, players take control of a robot named Trophy, as they make their way through various environments and levels. Each new level has a different environment and different obstacles. As they make their way through these levels, players must collect power-ups and upgrades to improve Trophy’s skills and levels. This game is pretty challenging, and one must be careful when playing not to get addicted.
The first thing I wanted to talk about in Trophy is the actual look of the game. Think of old Pokémon or other games similar to that. The old arcade look gives the entire game a retro feel. I feel like any players that are into retro or pixel games would enjoy the looks of this game. The colors and smoothness of the game are pretty well-done. I think the bright colors are great and give the game a nice pop. Obviously, the game is not going to be insanely smooth, because of its old arcade aesthetic. I did not find this as a problem, though, and thought the look of the game was great overall.
Loading into the actual game, there are a few things that I want to talk about. The length of Trophy was not bad, only playing it for a couple of hours kept me entertained and there were plenty of levels to go through. I enjoyed the difference in each level, as each map brought a new feeling to the players. New obstacles and items were constantly being discovered. The variety of monsters and bosses the players fought also kept the game very entertaining, and some of them were quite challenging.
I also really enjoyed the story of this game. A lot of games now adays heavily focus on gameplay and graphics to carry the game. The developers at 8-bit legit seemed to rely on the opposite of that, and tell a great story while still producing a good game. I thought the text boxes and interactions players had with different characters were not only cool to see but nostalgic of other old games such as sonic.
Trophy was pretty fun, and there were new challenges and mechanics that players learned along the way. Players also had the chance to unlock different skill sets through leveling up and playing. For ten dollars, I think this game has plenty of content to make the game worth it and think it is heavily underrated. I couldn’t find any prevalent problems for the game, so that was good. Overall, I would rate Trophy an 8 out of 10 and would recommend it to anyone that wants a chill 2D arcade game to play.
