The Discovery Tour App: Medieval Baghdad, a free mobile experience that transports users to Baghdad in the ninth century during the Abbasid Empire, was unveiled today by Ubisoft. The new software can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store and theApp Store, and it can be used on any device with a web browser.

Users of the Discovery Tour App: Medieval Baghdad can explore this lost city, a former capital for political, scientific, cultural, and commercial advancements, in two distinct ways using the recreation of Baghdad from Ubisoft’s video game Assassin’s Creed Mirage:
- First, Access Codex offers players meticulously chosen encyclopedic information about the Abbasid Caliphate and medieval Baghdad’s history, art, and culture. Through the app’s Augmented Reality elements, players may engage with content based on the Codex entries from History of Baghdad in Assassin’s Creed Mirage and gain access to further historical details for each component.
- Second, Explore Baghdad is a narrative-driven, gamified experience that takes about two hours to finish. Through a number of minigames and 360° adventure, players must gather Codex entries.
With the help of the Welsh Government through Creative Wales and in collaboration with Sugar Creative, one of the top immersive technology firms in the UK, the team created an ambitious and approachable cultural experience that combines historical research and interactive storytelling.
For instance, the app has authentic objects from the time period. Thanks to a number of excellent 3D scans that the museum took, the Ruby Lustre Bowl from the Arab World Institute Museum in Paris may be viewed up close and in depth in augmented reality via the Discovery Tour App: Medieval Baghdad.
Through the app, users can explore the ancient city of Baghdad as a window into daily life during the Abbasid Empire, in addition to using it as an interactive playground.
