Unbound: Worlds Apart Review for Nintendo Switch

Unbound: Worlds Apart is a platformer, puzzle adventure Nintendo Switch game developed and published by Alien Pixel Studios. It is a hand-drawn adventure game where there are worlds connected by portals. You are able to play as the main character, Soli, who is a gifted young mage that has the power to open and control portals unique to the properties of each world; Examples being inverse gravity, time manipulation, super strength, and more. While Soli has discovered these skills, he journeys across vast worlds, each one containing its own challenges and secrets to figure out how to defeat an evil being that is tearing apart his reality and collapsing the world.

The gameplay consists of different puzzles and platforming skills. It is twitch platforming, meaning that you need to test your reflexes on how well you can jump in and out of portals while also solving the puzzles presented to you in each stage. Unbound: Worlds Apart does not explicitly give you the controls, but you are able to press the different buttons to figure out how to move Soli, jump, and go through different portals. It is not that hard to get the hang of the basic controls, but I would say it is difficult to do multi movesets as the stages and worlds progress. With practice though, it becomes more fun and more enticing.

The story and lore itself is very unique and different. I don’t play that many fantasy games, so I found the lore eye-catching and keeping my interest. Soli, to me, is just a mage who wants to live his best life, but tragedy hits and he must learn how to cope and gain new skills to survive in this ever-breaking world-end. He is also very cute and adorable in the cut scenes and game, and it’s hard not to hate him!

In regards to the graphics of the game, I absolutely love how each piece of the game is hand-drawn! I could tell how much effort the artists and animators put into making this game visually appealing with the gameplay being fun. I am appreciative of how well the visuals are in the game and it makes me want to keep playing.

I really love playing video games! Growing up, my dad introduced me to video games, the first being Street Fighter. I have always been surrounded by them growing up and even now. They really impacted my life allowing me to share this commonality with my friends and new ones. I play a wide array of games, mostly PC, but sometimes PS4 and Nintendo Switch. Some of my favorite games are Final Fantasy VII, League of Legends, Persona 5, and Stardew Valley. As of recent, I've been playing Fall Guys and Among Us as well!
