- Subscription gaming takes off as consumers move towards unlimited model with wide variety
- Company commits to sustainability for independent developers with an updated pay structure and gamescom sponsorship
- Neverinth by CreAct Games and Another Indie launches on platform as 1,000th game
Eindhoven – One year after the official launch, Utomik, the PC game subscription service, announces its 1,000th game to join the platform. This milestone has been driven by significant growth of Utomik’s subscriber base and the addition of over 250 games in the last twelve months. Twelve of those games launched on day one in the first six months of this year and another seven have already been confirmed for the second half. To support this expansion, the Utomik team has doubled in size, adding new employees across the company.
An early pioneer in subscription gaming, Utomik is seeing rising consumer demand for an unlimited gaming service with a highly curated and diverse library of games. Specializing in indie games designed by new and incredibly talented developers, the platform drives the discovery of new games, genres, and favorites in the gaming community.
“When we first started talking about our vision for Utomik, there were a lot of questions from industry insiders, the developer community and players,” said founder and CEO Doki Tops. “People didn’t think consumer behavior could shift that significantly from the traditional, purchase-only model. And yet, here we are, just a short time later seeing all types of big companies embracing subscription gaming. In the last year, our user activity has doubled and in 2020 we’ll continue to see a substantial growth.”
As the subscription model in the gaming industry gains momentum, Utomik is doubling down on becoming the most impactful and supportive platform for independent developers. “It’s great to see other gaming companies move towards subscription, but they are not addressing how they will better serve independent developers, a group that is largely worried about the impact this model will have on their livelihood,” continued Tops. “At Utomik, we are, and have always been, committed to creating a sustainable model for independent developers that supports creativity from concept to launch. In fact, we recently updated our pay structure to help alleviate the risk with day one releases and games early in their lifecycle, to ensure fair pay regardless of user playtime.”
The 1,000th game on the platform, Neverinth, will be showcased by Utomik at gamescom alongside LunaSea, Coffee Talk, Decay of Logos, and other day one releases. Utomik is the lead sponsor of the Indie Arena Booth at the conference. “It is in our best interest and the best interest of our players to nurture independent developers,” added Tops. “Independent games can be some of the best-kept secrets in gaming and are what fuels imagination and creativity year after year.”
