This is going to be one of my most scatter-brained reviews I’ve ever written! This is for a very simple reason. I honestly haven’t been this enthralled by a game in a very long time – Virgo Versus The Zodiac by developer Moonana and publisher Degica.
Virgo Versus The Zodiac is a sparkling, colorful, and glittering explosion of sassy attitude, cuteness overlord, and fun. Virgo Versus The Zodiac is a JRPG is self-described to be inspired by the Mario and Luigi and Mother RPG Series. You play as Virgo, a rather mean lady who is the self-described Queen of Purity. You are a villain basically, whose objective is to purge the galaxy of heretics and Zodiacs and bring back the Golden Age.
Virgo Versus The Zodiac is gorgeous! There are a host of Candyland-like worlds for you to explore here. Truly, I was constantly blown away by just how amazingly pretty this game is. It invoked this deep feeling of nostalgia in me with the pixel graphics, the sugary landscapes and the host of friends you meet along the way (Like fluffy Alpacas and talking Gingerbread men!) On the flip side, the game also has moments of truly eerie imagery, like a mysterious masked woman who pops up when you make mad decisions. I have always been a huge fan of Tim Burton and anime, so to me this game feels like two worlds collided in an intergalactic fantasy. The music is hypnotic, electronic, incredible. The characters are done up in a super cute, kawaii anime style.
The dialogue is incredibly entertaining in this game. Seriously, I laughed OUT LOUD during playing Virgo Versus The Zodiac. I couldn’t help myself but to tell my friends on discord—seriously! That is what he/she just said! Take for instance, the main character Virgo, Queen of Purity. Virgo is hilarious. Some memorable voice lines include: “Ew!” “I wish you a peaceful death.” “Get out of my way, putrid scum!” “You may rest now, as long as you want [after she killed them].” This girl is all sass, and high blonde ponytail. At the end of every successful fight, she sits there and fluffs up her pixel ponytail. What an icon!
I’ve established that Virgo Versus The Zodiac is incredibly aesthetic with a fantastic soundtrack. Or at least, I hope I properly did that. Lets also talk about gameplay here. The game includes a variety of different difficulty levels, that serve all different sorts of players – including a difficulty mode that is well needed across almost all titles—a “Stress-Free” game mode! This is specifically for players who play at the end of a long work/school day and just want to sit and relax. The story is all the same, so you get to enjoy the game, without feeling frustrated by the difficulty level that can be sometimes frustrating when you don’t have hours to put into learning a combat style.
Also, super friendly to people who aren’t familiar with JRPG’s, like me! I did use this game mode for about an hour or so to get comfortable with the controls, and then amped up the difficulty. A fantastic resource for people who just don’t want the difficulty. A fantastic addition. Thank you, Moonana and Degica, for this addition!
Combat is time-based, so as long as you hit your buttons in time you will be slashing through your enemies in no time. Make sure to walk around and talk to NPC’s and interact with the environment. This will give you plenty of goodies to use on your travels! Many times, throughout the game, you will be given choices that change the way the story takes place. I know that this feature makes for many a happy gamer when it comes to games, and I most certainly had a tough time trying to make the correct decisions because I knew that it would effect the game.
Overall, Virgo Versus The Zodiac is truly something special. The art style is fantastic, the soundtrack rivals many a AAA game, and the personality that is bursting from the seams makes this game a winner in my book. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you like cute, you are going to LOVE this game. I highly recommend it!

I am a senior studying History at the University of Michigan. I've been playing video games since I was very young and around age 16 I had become entirely obsessed with the medium. I hope to one day work in the industry in any way I can.
