Developed by the impressive two-person team, Stove Studio, and published by Gamera Game, Warriors of the Nile is not your average turn-based tactics game. Adorable, clean, and somehow so satisfying, this fast paced rougelike game is filled with lovely art, smooth graphics, and fun sound effects. No longer will you be left waiting and watching the characters slowly move to position and battle. Instead, every choice is quickly executed, and the decisions of your actions will swiftly prove to either lead you to your victory or your downfall.
There is a total of three different types of characters that make up the team; each with varying strengths and movement capabilities. There is the Sun Warrior, a knight or tank class with high armor, but can only move and attack in small, limited ranges. Then there is the Dune Hunter, an almost exact opposite to the Sun Warrior, with weak defense, but with a wider range of movement and can shoot arrows from afar. Last, but not least, there is the Mystic Mage, who is powerful, but limited in movement and defense. Although, the three characters themselves do not level up, they instead can be equipped with empowering tablets and gear obtained for each stage won. As only one tablet can be selected per stage, choices and strategies will need to be made on how to best amplify your team’s strengths.
Despite the helpfulness of the tutorial, it’s only after playing the first couple of stages do the controls and directions of how to play become easier to understand. Each stage is randomly generated with different obstacles, tablet options, enemies and positions so no two fighting arena will be exactly alike. Warriors of the Nile is relatively fast-paced than most turn-based games and leads to a more exciting gameplay. However, this can also create a false sense of security as one wrong move can prove to be costly.
Aside from the cute style and the relative easiness of the first three stages, the game does increase greatly in difficulty the further you progress as your lost health does not return after each stage and the enemies just become stronger. Healing and resurrection tablets are an option, but are limited and only good as a last resort. It would more motivating and stimulating if there was an option to keep the tablets or at least the carvings and gear obtained throughout the stages. This way, by holding onto at least one of the benefits and attributes obtained, players can further focus on the team’s growth and how to better plan upcoming battles.
Strategy games can be stressful with heavy planning and waiting for positive outcomes but playing Warriors of the Nile is instead oddly satisfying. There are no real time limits, so you can play as slow or as fast as you like, with plenty of achievements to try and attain. Completing the stages in a certain amount of time and moves is an achievement of its own, but you won’t get penalized if you go over a certain timeframe. The worst part to worry about is that all the tablets, gear, coins, and carvings collected throughout the battles will disappear when all the characters are defeated.
PROS: Easy to pick up and play, addictive, great game to get started in turn-based games.
CONS: Very little backstory, can quickly become very difficult.
SCORE: 7/10

Steam Review
Video games have always been a huge influence in my life and have definitely shaped me to who I am today . Some of my best memories growing up were the many adventures and stories I was able to experience and become immersed in. If my hands aren't either covered in clay, typing, editing, creating, or helping shoving food in my mouth, they would either be gripped to a controller, tapping away at the screen of my phone, or clicking away on my PC. I am always up for trying something new because why live just one life when you can live many.
