Most games are about hunting creatures and/or battling them for rare treasures, and honestly, that’s kind of messed up. Especially if the animal has done nothing wrong and is just chilling, doing what nature has intended it to do. Developed and Published by Heart Shape Games LLC, We Are The Caretakers has taken on a new, different narrative when it comes to animals and the environment. Instead of hunting and destroying animals, this game will have players trying to protect them and take down any poachers who get in their way.
The balance between humans and wildlife have always been on a thin, thin line. On one hand, humans want to expand, grow, and create better lives for themselves and their communities. On the other hand, this almost always leads deforestation, over-hunting, and poaching. Thus, the Caretakers were created; peacekeepers to both sides and protectors for those who need help. They can’t save everyone, but that won’t stop them from trying.
The main objective of the Caretakers is to ensure the safety and healthy population of the animals known as the Raun. These Rhino look-alikes are not just adorable, but also important to the people who live among them. Unfortunately, just like with Rhinos, the threat of poachers is very real and the game does a great job at highlighting this danger. If that wasn’t bad enough, Caretakers must also tread the fine line of politics as their very reputation is always under scrutiny. No good deed goes unpunished in the game and it’s difficult to please everyone.
We Are The Caretakers is currently in Early Access and needs a bit more refining to really have it shine. The character designs are amazing, but this is not thoroughly translated throughout the game as some areas feel lacking with how bland they look in comparison to everything else. Controls can be clunky as there are the occasional strange pause and glitch that ruin the flow. The gameplay also begins quite slow, especially with learning the combat styles, abilities, and the world’s politics. It’s not until approximately 3-4 missions in does the game become more exciting to play. With more corrections and tweaks to these key areas, We Are The Caretakers certainly can shine.
There is already much potential in terms of world building for this game and increasing its replay value if there were more animals introduced instead of just having the attention on the Rauns. Different lands, unique creatures, their importance in their natural habitats, and new threats can all be explored in future developments. It’s exciting to think what the developers may come up with next and what they will add to increase the storyline.
This turn-based combat RPG will not only have players more environmentally aware but will also have their purchase of the game help conservation efforts. Players can have fun and feel good while doing so as 10% of the revenue generated will go to support the Wildlife Conservation Network’s Rhino Recovery Fund. Wholesome and captivating, We Are The Caretakers has certainly opened with great promise for more to come.

Video games have always been a huge influence in my life and have definitely shaped me to who I am today . Some of my best memories growing up were the many adventures and stories I was able to experience and become immersed in. If my hands aren't either covered in clay, typing, editing, creating, or helping shoving food in my mouth, they would either be gripped to a controller, tapping away at the screen of my phone, or clicking away on my PC. I am always up for trying something new because why live just one life when you can live many.
