This will be the third year in a row I will have reviewed a WWE game, all of which are titles that came off a long hiatus to get this series back to its former glory. Since the releases of “WWE 2K22” and “WWE 2K23” (check out my reviews HERE and HERE), the developers have been stepping it up and listening to player feedback. While this new release is still an improvement on the two priors, the leaps and bounds of how much better it is, feels more minimal compared to the previous ones. That’s still a positive thing, this series continues an upwards positive trajectory and every year I look forward to jumping into the ring and seeing familiar faces, new and old.
Like Ray Mysterio and John Cena in the previous games, “WWE 2K24” also includes a showcase mode highlighting memorable matches. This time, instead of all being devoted to a single wrestler, this year marks the 40-year anniversary of WWE and this time we get the showcase for the immortals. This showcase consists of twenty-one different matches spanning five different decades of wrestling, which includes iconic feuds such as Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock, as well as this year’s cover wrestler Cody Rhodes. MyRISE is back again, a cool little story mode for your created character, there are two different story arcs to choose from and while this is always a cool addition, this one didn’t quite click for me as much this time around.
Arguably the most popular aspect of these games is MyFACTION due to its online and addictive components. This is essentially a card game where you acquire cards throughout playing the game and other modes to build up your ultimate faction and fight against other players’ factions online. I don’t often get sucked into card-based games, but I can see the appeal here for many. There are so many different modes that are available in these games, while all interesting in their own right, I feel like none of them are fully executed to the best of their ability. Given that the developers have less than a year to pump out another one of these titles, I’m a bit surprised that this hasn’t turned into a live service game where they just continue to improve everything, rather than make all the players start completely over every year. I think all these game modes like MyFaction and MyGM and so-on would benefit from constantly evolving as time goes on rather than just being repurposed again and again with a little bit better coat of paint each time. When I jump into a wrestling game I just want to hop in a ring and wrestle with some of the great icons I grew up watching on TV. “WWE 2K24” does deliver on the core fundamentals on what I want, and it probably is the best wrestling game I’ve ever played, the controls continue to be refined in great ways. There is just a lot going on in here that seems almost there, but not firing on all cylinders just yet.
8.5/10
