We attended the GDC 2020 Virtual Booth for Watermark RPG Studio and sat with the co-founder, David Yen, to discuss their upcoming Metroidvania Style RPG, CodeX Athena.
CodeX Athena is a platformer but is also an open world RPG that consists of 12 different worlds that players can explore based on the Zodiac Signs. CodeX Athena is a 2D, 16-bit pixel graphics game. The story is about an illegal VRMMO game called Lost Heaven Online, which attracts a lot of players in search of the Ultimate Treasure. Protagonist Athena uses the game to find her lost father, which takes her through the journey of exploring different virtual worlds and using all the skills to solve puzzle and defeat the evils in the game.
The gameplay consists of the companions that players can find by collecting different starchips and putting them together on a board, which gives them different combinations. The companions are called SAINTS that are like droids that have different skills and abilities. With the help of companions, players can achieve great victories during attacks.
Watermark RPG has created 15 games for mobile platform in the past and are expecting to release CodeX Athena in Summer 2021 on Steam for now with expectation of other consoles following that. CodeX Athena is an interesting concept that combines the story concept of SAO with stories like Ralph Breaks the Internet or Ready Player One’s virtual world. We are excited to see the complete game in 2021.
