Dungeon of the Endless: Apogee Review for Mobile

Far in the future, a space-faring prison ship crashes on an alien planet. A pod crashes into the planet’s surface carrying survivors of the wreck, who must now work together to fight for their survival and escape the dangerous dungeons of the hostile planet. Dungeon of the Endless: Apogee is a new dungeon defense game coming out on the iOS App store and Google Play today, March 16th. Developed by Amplitude Studios and Playdigious, this game builds on the concept of a typical tower defense game, adding a sci-fi setting, characters, and unique challenges to make it more engaging.

The premise of the game is that a prison vessel has crash landed on a foreign planet. The crash survivors must work together to escape the twelve floors of dungeons without being killed by the hostile creatures inhabiting the planet. On each floor, players explore to unlock new rooms until they’ve found the exit room; then, they must go back to the start and carry their power crystal to safety without being killed by waves of monsters. Each floor presents new challenges and is randomly generated, meaning every play-through of the game is unique.

Dungeon of the Endless: Apogee Review for Mobile

I was given the opportunity to try out Dungeon of the Endless: Apogee before its public release, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The strategy and complexity was a little overwhelming at first, but it was a lot of fun and definitely a game I’d like to play more.

The art style and overall setting of the game was one of my favorite aspects of it. For the most part, the assets are composed of pixelated 8-bit characters and objects, lending a retro feel to this modern game. The atmospheric effects of the dramatic lighting and colors were very cool— although at times these effects did become a bit distracting; one example of this is the darkness of the shadows which made it at times hard to see where each room was.

Dungeon of the Endless: Apogee was a little difficult to pick up on, and could be especially hard for anyone new to gaming. The tutorial was helpful, but it didn’t explain everything. Many things— such as the waves of enemies which spawn as soon as you pick up the power crystal to carry it to the exit— were simply not addressed, and I had to learn the hard way: by dying repeatedly, and through lots of trial-and-error.

The challenge of Dungeon of the Endless: Apogee, though, also made it more enjoyable. Although it was a little hard to get into, once I got the hang of the game’s main functions, I found myself enjoying how difficult it was— it gave me a reason to play more, to improve my skills and progress. There are so many different elements to the game that it can be overwhelming at first glance, but once you play for a while, these elements all fall into place. The challenge of the game is, for me, addicting— and anyone who enjoys difficulty will love it.

The characters made Dungeon of the Endless: Apogee even more enjoyableFor every play-through of the game, players choose a set of two characters to begin with, and they can also find additional characters to join their team throughout the game. These characters each have their own strengths and weaknesses, skills, and personalities. Some are very unique and cute, such as the “War Pug” (my personal favorite). There are also a large number of characters which aren’t available by default, but which may be unlocked through playing the game. At the same time as choosing characters, the player may choose an escape pod to land in. Each pod has different advantages and drawbacks which change the games in various ways, as well. There are countless ways in which each playthrough of the game is unique, so it is unlikely players will lose interest quickly

Dungeon of the Endless: Apogee Review for Mobile

Overall, Dungeon of the Endless: Apogee is a unique game with many challenging elements which would make it appealing to a challenge-motivated gamer. Casual gamers may have a harder time picking up on the strategies, but anyone could still have fun playing this game, and I’d highly recommend it.
