Nexus 5X, originally announced as Stellaris Nexus, was launched into Steam Early Access on December 12, 2023. It is a game that is focused on condensing the deep strategy, tense diplomatic drama, and epic military encounters that are the hallmarks of the 4X single-player scene, and concentrating those gameplay elements into a competitive, short-run format that is perfect for game night. Groups of up to eight players can complete a full playthrough together in only about 60 minutes.
Dax Ginn, Studio Director at Whatboy Games, said, “As a team, we love the core concept of 4X games, but we wanted to evolve that to also capture the chemistry and tensions that emerge during game nights with friends. By concentrating the playtime down to about one hour, we are creating an exciting new opportunity for the 4X genre to move into a new ‘social strategy’ space.”
Adam Doherty, Game Director at Whatboy Games, added, “Nexus 5X has developed alongside our community to reach veteran 4X players, as well as competitive gamers who may never have played a 4X title before. Our goal is for Nexus 5X to be welcoming, without ever dumbing down the core appeal of the 4X format. We’ve had so much fun playing Nexus 5X with our dedicated early access community, and we’re looking forward to sharing the experience with new players on April 18, or right now in early access!”
Throughout its early access phase, Nexus 5X has consistently received 95%+ Very Positive reviews by players. The game captures the deep strategy, diplomatic intrigue, and epic interstellar space battles of a sprawling spacefaring 4X, but with a focus on fast-paced gameplay sessions among friends, akin to a game night.
Nexus 5X Key Features:
- An Hour of Power: Playing multiple sessions of deep strategy board games with friends is an exhilarating experience, and with the Nexus 5X, game nights can turn into endless fun.
- Social Strategy: Choose from a variety of distinct factions and leaders, and play solo or with 2-8 players in turn-based multiplayer mode. You can either play with your friends or challenge yourself in the Nexus online with skill-based matchmaking. Create unexpected alliances, carry out bitter betrayals, or secretly plot your way to the top to claim the Galactic Throne. All of this can be achieved in approximately 60 minutes.
- Diplomacy or “Diplomacy”: Players start from their safe home world and can quickly expand their control across the galaxy to explore and occupy new systems. Their ultimate goal is to take over the throne-world of Nexus. As they expand and explore, they can engage in military conflicts and diplomatic negotiations. However, the power struggle doesn’t end there. Players must also navigate the intricate politics of the Galactic Council, where rival empires compete for influence and votes to pass new resolutions and titles. This competition allows factions to empower themselves or advance their strategic objectives.
- Unique Factions & Leaders: If you are a role-player who enjoys diving deep into the lore-rich universe of Stellaris, or if you prefer a more systematic approach to strategy games, you can choose from a variety of factions and leaders that can change the way you play each match. These options offer a range of playstyles and strategies that can help you gain an advantage over your opponents.
Nexus 5X is coming to PC via Steam on April 18, 2024, with a price tag of $19.99 / £16.99 / €19.99. Currently, the game is available on Steam Early Access for a reduced price of $14.99 / £12.99 / €14.99. All players who have access to Stellaris Nexus will automatically receive an update to Nexus 5X on the launch day.
