Another Crab’s Treasure Review for PlayStation 5

The soulslike genre has been a very well-respected genre with tons of very high quality and rewarding challenging difficulties, but they’ve always been steeped in stories that are very dark and grim. There is nothing wrong with that, it always makes the experience feel even cooler in a way. The developers over at Aggro Crab opted to try a different approach with “Another Crab’s Treasure.” A more bright, colorful, and an overall family friendly approach. Almost as if you were embarking in the world of “Spongebob Squarepants” this game is not only a solid soulslike, but also a very approachable one, not just to fans of the genre, but to newcomers that may find soulslike games to be rather tough to get into.

Another Crab's Treasure Review for PlayStation 5

“Another Crab’s Treasure” dives into a sharp narrative focused on Krill, a spirited hermit crab thrust into a world where taxes pose an unexpected threat. Stripped of his cherished shell by a brazen theft, Krill embarks on a daring quest to reclaim it from an unlikely adversary: an actual loan shark. Yet, as Krill delves deeper into his mission, he finds himself swept into a larger journey—one that transcends mere property rights and delves into the heart of a sprawling oceanic treasure hunt. What begins as a quest for personal restitution soon evolves into a voyage of discovery and redemption, as Krill traverses the ocean floor, confronting the ravages of human pollution and the mysterious illness plaguing the wildlife. As creatures turn hostile in his presence, Krill must navigate not only the physical dangers of his environment but also the moral complexities of his journey. Against a backdrop of environmental decay and shifting allegiances, Krill’s adventure unfolds with unexpected twists and turns, leading him to confront his own limitations and the true meaning of home.

Through a blend of humor, heart, and high-stakes action, “Another Crab’s Treasure” offers a fresh and engaging take on the classic hero’s journey, with lots of wonder in it’s colorful aesthetic and it’s surprisingly well written satire on the current climate of the world. While the humor didn’t always land for me, comedy is subjective and I can see it landing more for other people, especially younger audiences. That said this is still a really fun game to just play, the talent tree aspect here is really unique and easy to understand. There is also a creative shell system here where Krill will be wearing a series of different items for his shell, each with their own buffs and nerfs, some of the items you get to wear are actually pretty funny, but I won’t spoil it here.

The combat itself does feel a bit unrefined compared to others in the genre, “Another Crab’s Treasure” truly still does feel like a good entry point. I also noticed that the enemy attack patterns were a bit difficult to read, normally there are stronger tells so I found myself getting walloped a bit more often than I was used to. Aside from those minor issues, everything about this game pretty much kills it with its awesome tone and bright presentation. If you were ever curious what game to test out if you wanted to get into soulslikes, “Another Crab’s Treasure” would be it!

8/10
