Sir Whoopass Review by Matthew O’Toole

Atomic Elbow’s Sir Whoopass is that certain kind of game that players will either fall for immediately or set aside as not their thing. I tend to think it is akin to a movie like Airplane. The jokes come rapid-fire by the minute. While each individual one may not hit home every time, more likely than not, most are going to hit the wall at some point and stick, delivering a good belly laugh.

In the kindest of ways, Sir Whoopass is a competent, yet lovingly crafted 3rd-person adventure game that spoofs the genre. It is not made on a AAA budget, nor does it have the refinements of one. Some may even say it has a lot of jank to it. However, I counter that it is the best kind of jank. The type that games like Garry’s Mod (or really any case of crazy Source Engine physics) and Goat Game became legends off of in gaming communities. The gameplay is exact and to the point. You have different weapon categories and attacks, and they do exactly what you would expect them to do. Combat is not an overall challenge, but it is the presentation that matters most here.

The world of Sir Whoopass is not serious, and it is all the better for it. Again, I compare it to the worlds crafted by Zucker, Abrams, and Zucker in Airplane and The Naked Gun films. It is a world of parody and ridiculousness that contains the backbone of a serious plot, as if the main characters walked off from another movie set into a Looney Tunes cartoon. The narration reminds me of shows like animated adaption of Earthworm Jim or Dave the Barbarian, with sharp wit in every sentence. The characters, if not outright ignoring the insanity of their situations, and empowered by it. I fiendishly turned a cat into a cappuccino in order to resurrect a character with satanic black magic, crossing the line so many times that it became hilarious.

If you are up for a light, silly time that still keeps you just engaged enough with its overall story, characters, setting, and gameplay. Sir Whoopass is one hundred percent a recommendation from me. For the love of God, do not go into it expecting a game world like Lord of the Rings, Warhammer, or The Elder Scrolls. It parodies and pays homage to those with respect and plenty of ridiculous jokes. It is not the next great fantasy RPG, but I do think Sir Whoopass is the next great satire game, and I think fans of the genre will greatly appreciate it.

Score: 9/10
Sir Whoopass is available for PC via Steam.

Your local neighborhood nutjob, gamer, and teacher! I'm an avid fan of many genres such as platformers, shooters, horror, etc. I am also an avid tabletop gamer - hugely into the worlds of Warhammer and all of their spinoffs. I'm a big believer in being objective - even if something is not my cup of tea, I want to talk about it on the objective level - is it well made, crafted with love, and with care for the fans? If so, that's a good game in my book for someone and well worth their hard earned dollarydoos!
