Asterix & Obelix: Slap them All! for the Nintendo Switch is a brawler fighting game developed by Mr. Nutz Studios and published by Microids. At the starting screen, you are given the choice of selecting either Asterix or Obelix to play against the Romans who are trying to invade your village in Gaul. The gameplay throughout is simple: beat the heck out of the Roman soldiers!
Gameplay:
As said above, the gameplay is relatively simple to understand and very easy to learn. There are buttons for punching, jumping, throwing, and slapping, as well as movement. While there are no complex fighting moves or abilities, bashing and slapping thousands of Roman soldiers and other enemies while moving forward in stages is relatively satisfying. The game itself has four difficulties, such that players can adjust to their own difficulty based on their experience. One criticism that I do have is the inability to control both Asterix and Obelix in the same game, as once one character died or was defeated, the game is over and must be started over at the last stage. Furthermore, there is no switching option for characters, so I assume that you are meant to stick to one for the entire game. Therefore, it seems that Asterix & Obelix: Slap them All! was only meant for two players to play together, so some of the gameplay aspect is lost in single player. However, this game is perfectly playable in single player.
Graphics, Artstyle, and Customization:
As said above, difficulty can be customized, however, there are no options for language, graphics or music volume, which I thought was rather unusual. There are only two game modes, adventure and freeplay, and adventure can be played in single or co-op mode. I was a fan of the art style used in the game, as the cartoonish colorful characters as well as the animations used for fighting really bring out the funny and light-hearted nature of this game. The story, while simple and short, had funny characters with goofy names.
Thoughts:
I thoroughly enjoyed playing as both Asterix and Obelix, slapping and punching multiple enemies as once as I played each stage. The light-hearted, jolly music goes well with the exaggerated, yet effective fighting moves of our main characters and cartoonish setting. While simple, the story maintains the style of the game effectively. However, I think that the game, overall, is quite short in length, as this game could easily be played in one day as a single playthrough. Furthermore, there was a lack of customization and a lack of support for single player versus duo player. Overall, Asterix & Obelix: Slap them All! is a fun game that calls back to the arcade style of video game, as it was filled with action, fun, but not meant to be played for a long time. Overall, I would recommend this game to players who like fighting style games and want just a short, fun, not committal style of arcade brawler.
I give Asterix & Obelix: Slap them All! A 7/10.
