You can hear the crowd calling out the bands’ names and your fingers twitch against your instrument. As the vibrations from the speakers blasts through your body, you stare down the other band across from yours and their eyes are just as hungry for victory. There can only be one winner in this battle, and as you set up your next song, you just know it’s going to be you. After all, with a band likes yours, there’s nothing to stop your tour. Developed and published by Aerie Digital, Battle Bands: Rock & Roll Deckbuilder certainly takes on a new meaning to battling it out with your friends. Play solo or up to a group of four, this deck-building game requires wits, strategy, and good communication if you plan to become the best band in Riff City.
Before you can unleash your inner Rock God and call forth a hailstorm of sick riffs on your enemies, you will need to know the basics. There are four playable positions: the keyboardist, guitarist, bassist, and the drummer. Each role is essential and with so many customizable card options, these roles can be furthered specialized to fit the needs of your band. One player can focus on generating more energy for their bandmembers while another player can focus on playing more support card roles. Not only are the decks and cards very customizable, but so are your bandmates! Make your avatar look like you, or just go crazy and create the wildest look you can think of. The opposing bands are going to look just as outlandish so why not match their level of crazy?
The main objective of the battles is to create enough hype to reach your hype meter at the top of your screen and to make sure your opponent doesn’t reach it first. The main goal of the entire game is to eventually make your way to the Coliseum and take down the final boss. By doing so ends your tour, but by no means is it an easy feat. Leveling up your cards will take some time and challenging the surrounding bands are the best way to do so. Don’t forget that Riff City is full of interesting and eccentric characters. Take some time and explore those question mark areas because you never know who you might encounter.
Battle Bands: Rock & Roll Deckbuilder is best played with others as the moments to strategize and work together adds another layer of fun and complexity to the game. Not only are your tactical prowess and communication skills put to the test, but also your attention to detail. Playing solo can be just as exciting as your AI Team members keep you on your toes with their own chosen cards. So, get ready to rock harder than you’ve ever rocked before and let your freak flag fly.
PROS: Great to play with friends, also fun to play solo, family friendly, great music and art style.
CONS: AI team members can throw off your plans/preparations when putting down cards.
Battle Bands is available for PC for $17.99 via Steam Early Access.
Video games have always been a huge influence in my life and have definitely shaped me to who I am today . Some of my best memories growing up were the many adventures and stories I was able to experience and become immersed in. If my hands aren't either covered in clay, typing, editing, creating, or helping shoving food in my mouth, they would either be gripped to a controller, tapping away at the screen of my phone, or clicking away on my PC. I am always up for trying something new because why live just one life when you can live many.
