Dungeons & Aliens Review for Nintendo Switch

Dungeons & Aliens is a tower defense game by Kool2Play Studio and Arts Alliance, similar to Plants vs Zombies. Your character is on the left side of the screen and you have an influx of enemies coming in on your right. The game offers 60 levels for you to beat and powers up are available to upgrade your attack power and defense.

Dungeons & Aliens’s storyline is basic and pretty straight forward, the voice acting in the game doesn’t add any immersive value alongside the character design seeing as it is just gibberish the characters are speaking. The game seems to be trying to make the gameplay its main selling point and offers items you can use as barriers to stop incoming enemies such as stones and bombs but with advancing into the game, you’ll find yourself in a repetitive stage of having to grind for gold.

The enemies and rewards in this game are unbalanced; it’s a bit difficult to advance in the game because you have swarms of enemies crowding in on you at the end of each level and find that the only way to beat them is if you have enough magic power to cast special attacks such as a meteor or a lightning attack. The worst thing about these attacks is that you cannot replenish them. You buy one meteor strike and that’s it, you can’t use it again. You have to buy them again and again and they’re expensive. It would’ve made more sense to have them be charge attacks instead of for a one time use.

Upon completing the level, the reward amounts to not much because each meteor spell costs 50 gold and the reward you get is around 50-68 gold. You need a good number of spells to advance through one level and if you’re not spending your gold on magic, you have the choice to level up your attack power or defense which is about 700 gold. So most of your time playing this game goes to you grinding for enough gold to upgrade your stats.

Another thing to mention about D & A is that while playing through each level, there is no music in the background at all. There’s no music whenever a boss enemy appears on screen either, the only music you hear is at the beginning of the game when you’re at the menu screen and the cutscenes for the story start. If the developers had made an effort to at least have an entertaining BGM in the background it would have dramatically changed things about the gameplay for the better but for the reality of it, you’re stuck grinding without having catchy music to entertain you in the meantime. For all the game is worth I believe it is suited better for the iOS or Android rather than a console. It’s a not a bad game and I’m sure it’ll catch the eyes of those who are into tower defense games and like the challenge of grinding so they can feel satisfaction once they’ve become overpowered.

I play a lot of games ranging from different genres like fighting games, i.e Tekken and Street Fighter, RPG's i.e Dark Souls and Final Fantasy, side-scrollers, visual novels, MMO's, Shooters, and Horror. The more violent and story drove the better!. But, as I mentioned before my range for videogame genres has no bounds, I'll play anything as long as it's fun!
