Everything We Know About METROID PRIME 4 So Far

It’s been a long time coming but Samus Aran is finally putting on the power armor and gaming fans around the world are eagerly awaiting the release of Metroid Prime 4. The game, which is easily one of the most anticipated games of the past 10 years, was announced in the middle of Nintendo’s showcase at E3 2017. It’s still early days but some things have been confirmed and there are plenty of rumors, so here’s everything we know about Metroid Prime 4 so far.

Metroid Prime 4 Release Date?

Unfortunately, there’s no official release for Metroid Prime 4 yet. The only thing we know for sure is that the game will be a Nintendo Switch exclusive. It’s difficult to even guess as to when they might release the game.

There was one clue a while ago; the Norwegian website for Nintendo made a post saying that they were excited for 2018, which would see the release of games like Bayonetta 3 and Metroid Prime 4. The post has since been edited though. All references to those games have been removed and there’s been nothing new confirmed since. Even if the game is released in 2018, it won’t be until very late in the year and it may be after a port of the original trilogy for the Switch.

Have There Been Any Trailers?

The closest thing that we’ve had to a trailer for Metroid Prime 4 is the official launch trailer Nintendo showed during E3. It doesn’t tell us much about the game though, other than that it is being created. Given that people had given up entirely on a new Metroid game – never mind one in the Prime series – this is no doubt going to be enough for some people. We can expect more trailers as development continues. Speaking of development…

Are Bandai Namco Developing Metroid Prime 4?

One of the few things that Nintendo has confirmed is that Metroid Prime won’t be developed by Retro Studios, the team behind the original trilogy. We had no idea who the developer was until Eurogamer released a report in February suggesting that the developer was Bandai Namco.

Eurogamer reported that the game was being developed by Bandai Namco Singapore before Bandai Namco Japan took over development to free up the Singapore team for another game. Nintendo is yet to confirm this, but all the evidence fits, including the LinkedIn job descriptions for the staff at Bandai Namco Singapore.

What Story Can we Expect?

There’s nowhere near enough information out there to piece together a potential story for the game. We can say that the ending for Metroid Prime 3 didn’t exactly leave the door open for a direct sequel. While the game ended with Samus entering hyperspace and there’s the chance for the sequel to explore a new galaxy and world, we expect the story of the original trilogy has finished.

Eurogamer published an interview with series producer Kensuke Tanabe in 2015, where Tanabe said that the stories of Dark Samus and Phazon had finished. That the game is being handled by a new team also suggests that this game will have a different story or direction.

Conclusion

It’s still too early to tell a lot of things about Metroid Prime 4, such as the story and release date. We do know some things though, including that there is a change of developer and that the game is being worked on. Look forward to continuing the adventures of Samus some time in the near future!
