ExoCorps, by developer and publisher Gingerbred, is a fast-paced first (or third) person shooter that keeps you engaged every second of the way. You have an arsenal of missile darts, plasma, lasers, autocannons, railguns, miniguns, and ballistic missiles that can lock onto unsuspecting foes. Everyone else has them, too, so you better watch your back.
I think the average player dies around 15-20 times a match, and maybe even more in a free-for-all. The missiles are such a cheap weapon, no one likes getting followed by the swarms, but it feels so good to unload them yourself. I joined a server where we agreed to limit the weapon choice, namely those missiles. Railguns only is a true challenge, because in that case you need to be as precise as possible to land a hit – and you need 2-3 hits for a kill. Take that and remember these are moving targets, juking and dodging.
You also have a nifty jetpack, which is a blessing and a curse. It will take you where you need to go, but if you don’t adjust your speed then you won’t stick the landing; you will flat out die and lose a point on your net score. You can find yourself with a negative score just because of fall damage. I don’t think that’s a fair mechanic but fall damage does keep it interesting. If someone shoots at you while you are falling, and if you fall to your death, then the player gets a point. I don’t agree with that either! Scoring is more of an ego-reward anyway. There is no experience gain for your profile or anything, but you can change up your camouflage.
You can really get into the match once you have your first entanglement with another player. There is something appealing with flying around on the jetpack and maneuvering around natural cover to get an advantage in a firefight. If someone fires the missile maelstrom at you, the best thing you can do is turn around, equip the minigun, and fire directly behind you. The missiles are coming for you, so don’t aim at them. You can also strafe into the dunes or rocks to guide the missiles into a natural shield. Unfortunately, the jetpack makes you a target. It also freezes your ability to regain power for your health and for your ammo.
The sound effects are good and definitely help with the immersion. The constant pounding of missiles act like artillery blasts going off all over the place. I think a soundtrack would only help keep players engaged. I have to admit, the constant beeping from homing missiles gets on my nerves. Aesthetically, the game looks good. We have three maps that are really well designed and varied; they each add something to the experience. We have a map with rock formations, a nighttime desert, and a low gravity moon scenario. I think I would like to see an urban scenario, or even a volcanic planet with environmental damage.
If you remember Tribes fondly, then I think you might have a good time with ExoCorps. Instead of gliding around, you balance flying around and preserving ammo. I wanted to show some gameplay, but the game doesn’t seem to agree with OBS and NVIDIA Shadowplay.
