The highly anticipated real-time strategy (RTS) game Stormgate opened its Steam Early Access trial to players worldwide today, according to Frost Giant Studios. Before the game’s August 13 free-to-play launch, closed beta testers, Kickstarter backers, and those who pre-order one of three Early Access Packs on Steam can now take advantage of a two-week early access period.

Developed by StarCraft II and Warcraft III veterans, Stormgate is an ode to vintage real-time strategy games. Stormgate, a post-apocalyptic science fiction and fantasy game, requires players to assemble and lead armies in fierce combat. The game’s three fiercely asymmetric factions—warring armies fighting for dominance over our planet—are included in early access. Players are sure to find an army they love to play among the formidable Human Vanguard, the demonic Infernal Host, and the techno-angelic Celestial Armada.
Stormgate makes classic real-time strategy gaming more approachable by using contemporary technologies. In order to allow players of all skill levels to enjoy RTS gameplay without having the high “actions per minute” (APM) of an experienced pro, the “BuddyBot” serves as training wheels or an always-on helper to assist in managing the game’s economy and base-building. Inputs are made simpler by automated control groups and the fast macro panel, which lowers the skill floor without raising the skill ceiling.
Stormgate provides four primary gameplay modes:
- Campaign: Take part in three free missions and pay more ones to delve deeper into this dynamic plot
- Competitive: Take part in 1v1 rankings. A 3v3 mode led by heroes will be released later
- Cooperative: Play as strong Heroes in three-player cooperative matches against AI opponents on maps with distinct goals
- Custom Games: During early access, players can challenge each other in 1v1, 2v2, or the MOBA-style Turf War game (editor to be provided later).

Early Access Packs Include:
- The Gold Vanguard Army Accent cosmetic enhancement, Chapter 1 of the Vanguard campaign (which includes three replayable missions), and Amara, a Vanguard hero, are all included in the Early Access Pack ($24.99 USD).
- Deluxe Early Access Pack ($39.99 USD): Contains all of the items in the Early Access Pack along with a Chicken Supporter Pet, Auralanna, the Celestial Hero, and Maloc, the Infernal Hero.
- For $59.99 USD, you may get the Ultimate Early Access Pack, which has all the contents of the Deluxe Early Access Pack plus unlocked access to the Firestorm Fog of War shader and Chapters 2 and 3 of the Vanguard campaign.
The devs intend to keep adding new missions every few months, so the Stormgate campaign will keep growing both during early access and after. Because Stormgate is meant to be a very social experience, gamers who buy access to these narrative-driven experiences will eventually be able to invite others to play together for free.
