Gundam Breaker 3, developed by Crafts & Meister, embodies the philosophy for Gundam model kits whole heartedly. This focus allows the developer to focus on the insane number of creative options available allowing the player to make their own mobile (mech) suit that they find cool. While the developers focus on creativity, ensuring that the game embodies the philosophy of the company, they did not skip out on making a story fit for the game itself. This forced the developers on what kind of story the game needs to be to fulfill the core ideals of the parent company. However, this thought process and restrictions does not make the game bad by any means, but instead show cases the creativity of the developers and storyboard writers. Gundam Breaker 3 is a game about creativity and it is showcased in the customization, gameplay, and anime like story.
The developers had to allow the player to customize their own mobile suit to fit the core philosophy of the company their game is a part of. Gundam as a franchise has evolved throughout the years with one of the core aspects is the ability to customize the Gundam model kit through painting and modeling plastic. Gundam Breaker 3 builds heavily upon this by granting the player access to the extensive catalogue of Gundam model kits allowing the player to make their own unique model. This is then compounded with the various upgrades allowing the player to enhance their Gundam’s reaction speed, mobility, shields, and power. Furthermore, the player can unlock more as they progress through the story so if there is a particular mobile suit the player is looking for, they can obtain it in a reasonable time. Aside from finding the player finding their favorite mecha to use in battle they can paint it to truly make it theirs. This allows the player to freely express themselves in and even modifying the mecha with specialized parts to set it apart from the rest of the crowd. Before the player can get access to making their perfect Gundam or mobile suit they have to play the game and going through the loops to make it.
Gundam Breaker 3’s gameplay might feel familiar to some players as it borrows some elements from the Dynasty Warriors Franchise. This familiarity to that franchise is only in the combat aspect as the game makes the player face waves of enemies all from the Gundam franchise. While at face value the gameplay loop is defeat waves of enemies and get to the end of the stage there is another deeper layer by adding in various different mechanics. These mechanics are based on various underlying upgrades and aspects the player can obtain over the course of the game. This is similar to the extensive customization available to the player allowing various Gundams or mobile suits to take on various roles similar to constructing parties in other role playing and even Japanese role-playing games. Furthermore, this plays an important role in the multiplayer aspect where the player can team up with friends or random players taking on harder story missions to obtain better loot. Multiplayer opens up another possibility to the player allowing them to take inspiration as to what kind of build they wish to make. They can make a mecha catered to a more supportive role to even a hybrid DPS (damage per second) class with skills that apply buffs and resistances at the same time. One key aspect tying the customization to the gameplay is ultimately the story presented in the game.
In regards to the story it borrows the anime troupe of tournaments to progress the plot in order to fit the combat focus gameplay. Without going to far into the game in order to avoid spoilers the player character takes on the role of the silent main protagonist as they team up with other people in various tournaments. These tournaments are to help the player grow stronger in how they build their Gundam or mobile suit to great effect as each new level gets progressively harder. The reason as to why the game relies on tournaments for story telling players will need to look at previous anime releases were stories such as Gundam Build Fighters, Gundam Build Fighters Try, and Gundam Build Divers using the trope to great effect. While this might make the story telling less interesting for players interested in the story the DLC changes it up by a bit introducing more thought-provoking ideas. In addition, to a darker narrative in the DLC, some of the DLC stories line up with some of the darker themes presented in the franchise while toning it down to ensure it does not alienate any new comers.
Crafts & Meister have crafted an amazing game that took a well-established franchise turning it into a one-of-a-kind experience for any fan of mecha games. The creativity available in this game is something whole heartedly different from contemporary games released right now. Moreover, the fast-paced action compliments the mecha genre the game spawned from as it focuses on being more of those old Dynasty Warrior games for its combat. This is all then coupled into an engaging anime like story that fits the core philosophy of the parent company with the exaggeration accompanied with anime. Gundam Breaker 3 by Crafts & Meister is an easy 8/10 game by engaging the player in customization, fast paced action, and allowing the player to take on the role of the silent protagonist in an anime.
