HoloCure - Save the Fans! Review for Steam

HoloCure – Save the Fans!, developed and published by KayAnimate, is an unofficial free fan-made game for the company Hololive.  The game borrows heavily from the rougelike genre of games as players will need to survive waves of enemies and get stronger by defeating them over time.  Moreover, the game itself was made by fans of the Hololive Corporation and by no means affiliated with the company.  This means that the game is a fan project and a really good one as the characters as of right now feel balanced along side the various upgrades present in the game.  To go into detail as to Hololive itself the company is focused on entertainment by using streaming websites like YouTube and Twitch to grow out their audience through various idol groups the company has.  These idols are part of different generations and branches talking in English, Indonesian, or Japanese.  Moreover, fans of the Vtubers involved will be drawn into the game itself due to their involvement in the project due to the various live streams showcasing the game.

The base gameplay focuses on an isometric d2 rougelike arcade like shooter with some additional elements to make the game feel a lot more unique in comparison to other games of similar nature.

The core gameplay loop focuses on players either doing stage mode or endless mode to obtain coins necessary for upgrading base stats or getting new characters.  Upgrading base stats is pretty self-explanatory however earning new characters that is something else as they are locked behind a gacha system.  Albeit for free as the only way to get more characters is through playing the game each one offering their own special ability and attacks.  This allows for some creative ways on completing stages and provides players with a sense of agency in regards to choosing who to play as.   As for the characters the player can play it is divided based upon generation and group with the first English branch being free at the start.

Fans of the Vtubers in Hololive will realize that the music in the game is remixed version of the original songs that the Vtubers sang on their YouTube channels. So, fans of the music side of the will greatly appreciate the how the songs have been renditioned in the chiptune composition.  Aside from the music, the sound effects present in the game fit in and provide the needed audio queues for the player to recognize what is happening.  This allows players to not just interact with the game not just from the controls but through the audio as well.

While there is an overarching story most players will be focused on playing the game as their favorite Vtubers from Hololive itself.  Moreover, despite being a fan game. The game is very well polished and needs to be praised for being so well made.  The team behind this game should be proud of themselves as they not just made a fan game, but a very polished game that people would have bought.  As a fan of the company and a fan of video games, I applaud the team behind the game and can easily recognize that the game is a solid 10/10 game as it has solid gameplay mechanics, music, and in regards to the file size it does not take up too much space.

I would describe myself when interacting with games as a strategist with a pension for stealth and loud explosions.
