Ys Memoire: Revelations in Celceta Review for Nintendo Switch

YS Memoire: Revelations In Celceta for the Nintendo Switch was developed by Nihon Falcom and published by Marvelous (XSeed) is a remastered port of the original release for the PlayStation Vita during 2012. This makes the game a port of the previous game with some additional elements to set it apart from the original installment by arranging the original sound track for the game. Other than that, the game feels like it is trying to stay true to the PS Vita controls due to the layout of both consoles which is kind of cool of the team to do. As for the narrative of the game with the game being a port it stays true to the original and with such a historic series that needs to be the case. As for the gameplay the Nintendo Switch’s controller scheme has some resemblance to the layout of the PS Vita, but that is to be expected due to video game standards.
Gameplay wise the game it feels dated for the current times, yet it feels perfectly fine for the game. Other than that, the utilization of using the triggers and tying them to special skills is a nice feature considering the limitations of the controller. Moreover, the game feels fluid and responsive as the general gameplay focuses on real time combat so players will need to attack, evade, block, and even switch characters in combat or exploration. In doing so will allow the player to have the necessary controls to keep up with the enemies in the game as some of them can be challenging during some areas. Also, the gameplay will take up a large portion of the player’s experience as players will mostly be out exploring the map, and fighting various enemies. While this might take up a decent amount of the player’s time, the narrative is what drives the game and a major part of the series.

Narrative the game still follows the narrative beats of when it first launched on the PS Vita, but with the game on the switch there is a demand from the community to keep the narrative consistent. This is due to the YS series being a narratively driven series as it started in the early 90s late 80s. As for the narrative in the game it follows Adol and players will play through a chapter of his life through the game. These games cover a different portion of Adol’s life so each game is self-contained so to speak, but players who are more familiar with the franchise will be more engrossed with the narrative itself as some player might find the narrative to drag on from time to time with large breaks through the game play.

The music in this has can be considered an arranged version of the original soundtrack present in the PS Vita. This can be a decisive part for some fans of the series, especially those who played the original and how they feel about the changes in the soundtrack. As for the soundtrack itself it still encapsulates a variety of genres to bolster the player’s experience. Moreover, when playing the game, the music does not feel out of place and more or less adds to what is being played on the screen as to ensure player’s attention is focused on playing the game.

YS Memoire: Revelations In Celceta is a solid port of the previous game and provides gamers a new way on playing the game as more retro consoles are going to be a bit pricey and varied in functionality. Other than that, this game is a pretty good port from the PS Vita and allows for players to play the game as opposed to keeping the game locked to a retro console of which most people will not have access to. This hopefully might introduce a remake or remaster of the first game of the series so people can experience the narrative that started the series. With that being said the game for a port is a solid 8/10 for what it has done and other than that I hope the companies can remaster the original games for the current systems out now.
