Minute of Islands, from developer Studio Fizbin and publisher Mixtvision, is an upcoming 2D animated narrative adventure game in which you take control of a girl named Mo as she seeks to restart a machine that will prevent the eradication of humanity.

…Sort of…you see, the game has a very unique world and background that is only hinted at. In fact, most of humanity seems to be deceased already. The game warns you that Mo will go through depression as she ventures on her journey, and that this will not be a happy-go-lucky adventure on the high seas ala Monkey Island.

As keeper of the Omni-switch, a seemingly magical technological device, it is your job to keep what is basically a giant filtration system up and running (done so by the strength of four titan sized brothers) to prevent a green spore from choking the life out of the world. Not only is it a poisonous fog/mold thing that kills creatures, it causes hallucinations as well. Swell!

Along the way, Mo will witness such marvelous sights as rotten carcasses of whales and other sea animals, recently killed jackalopes, and the skeletal remains of a once-thriving humanity. Her uncle is still around luckily, equipped with a hazmat suit, but the demo ends shortly after you meet him, and I am sure he will play a bigger role in the story in the full release. A big part of the exploration is collecting experiencing memories from Mo’s past, which take the form of ghostly fish and sea creatures that pop up as you analyze the environment. They are usually haunting and sad remembrances of ages past, however, which help them to blend effortlessly into the environments and overall atmosphere that the game is shooting for.

Perhaps my absolute favorite part of the entire game is the art style, which is like if Adventure Time was designed by H.R. Giger. Organic doors and tubes and the decay of life in all of the environments very easily reminds me of the Alien franchise, and I think it is a match pulled off flawlessly by the design team, as the animation itself is fluid and beautiful to look at throughout gameplay.

Overall, if you are looking for a somber, but well-crafted narrative exploration game, Minute of Islands looked poised to please you greatly in the first quarter of 2021. With well crafted atmosphere, design, and fluid animation, you can tell the developers put all of their heart and effort into crafting this unique story, and at the very least, is well worth taking a look at as it nears its final release.

Your local neighborhood nutjob, gamer, and teacher! I'm an avid fan of many genres such as platformers, shooters, horror, etc. I am also an avid tabletop gamer - hugely into the worlds of Warhammer and all of their spinoffs. I'm a big believer in being objective - even if something is not my cup of tea, I want to talk about it on the objective level - is it well made, crafted with love, and with care for the fans? If so, that's a good game in my book for someone and well worth their hard earned dollarydoos!
