Moo Lander Review for Steam

Moo Lander is a 2D action-adventure game, by developer The Sixth Hammer, with humorous plot and interesting puzzles. You play as Lander, an astronaut that crash lands on mars and must find a way to repair his ship. Your job is to gather the parts to repair the ship but you end up running into some rather unusual trouble in the form of some large farm animals. Also, along for the ride is Hamilton, an AI system that will aid you on your journey through this planet full of mystery, puzzles, and the most legendary of all cows. Play through the story listening to the banter between Hamilton and Lander while trying to survive in this world to hopefully fix your ship.

When you first start the game, you pick a mode to play in. Story is the default version, with a balanced amount of challenge and plot. For players who want a more difficult experience, there is Challenge mode and ‘Legendairy’, and for those who really like the casual humor, there is Cheasy mode. Once you pick a mode, (I went with story mode), you are then taken through a cutscene where Lander crashes onto a planet much to Hamilton’s dismay. Upon landing you encounter what looks to be a cow that approaches your ship before running off when you start it up. Thus begins your journey in this world looking for repair parts and milk, lots of milk.

Overall, Moo Lander is a very humorous and fun to play experience. It is a 2D side scroller game where you control the ship you crash landed in, W to fly up and S to go back down, with A and D being used for left and right. The game itself recommends a gamepad for a better experience, but the keyboard controls are not hard to use. Other than the exploration and humorous story, the game also has its fair share of interesting puzzles and surprisingly epic boss fights with alien cows. Moo Lander is not too long to play through and will probably take about six hours in story mode. This indie game is very unique and you can tell a lot of care was put into its creation. The atmosphere and art are beautiful and the voice acting is very well done.

As far as issues with the game, I do not have many. While, at first, it seemed like just a meme game with a funny story and alien cows, I was pleasantly surprised with how good the game actually is. One of the only things I had issues with was how hard it is to not run into things, the controls are a little touchy and with the sometimes very narrow passages scraping your ship along the sides of the cave is not uncommon. This, however, might be one of the reasons it could be better on a gamepad. The only other thing I can comment on is that the game is a bit slow going at the start and takes a bit to actually take off story and action wise, but overall not too bad.

Moo Lander is a well made indie game that features humor and action. The story is funny but interesting and the exploration is fun with cool puzzles and mechanics. There is also a fair amount of action and boss fights with cows, which are a lot more epic than they sound. The only issues are with some of the physics and the slow start, but nothing that really impedes the gameplay. I am giving this game an 8 out of 10 because it is a well made game with action and humor that has very few issues along the way.

I enjoy a wide variety of games from intricate survival/adventure games to simple platformers. I am also a sucker for a good story game.
