PAX East 2025: The Last Caretaker Impressions

The Last Caretaker is a first-person survival action-adventure game where the player controls the Last Caretaker, a robot on Earth. The robot’s mission is to nurture human seeds into viable beings and send them to join the rest of humanity in space. The game begins in a bunker, and the player must explore the environment to understand their objectives. Instead of explicit instructions, the game reveals goals through exploration and interaction with items, aided by an AI voice. Players have complete freedom to explore, recycle resources, and craft necessary items and weapons. Due to being a robot, players must manage battery power for various functions and maintain the robot’s vitality by using recharge stations found throughout the game. Most elements within the game world are interactive.

The Last Caretaker features puzzle-solving elements where players connect wires to power stations and unlock doors in oceanic outposts. Exploration opens up at the shipping dock, revealing a world where drastically risen sea levels have submerged all land, leaving humanity to inhabit tall buildings and sea-based outposts. The core gameplay loop involves exploring these outposts to uncover the full map, locating and nurturing human seeds for a space-bound mission, and retrieving intel to understand the events that led to the inactivity of other caretakers.

Beyond exploration and survival, players will engage in combat against rogue bots and robotic sharks. Overall, The Last Caretaker offers an intriguing experience with sufficient mystery and enjoyable gameplay to maintain player interest. The game will initially be released on Steam, with subsequent releases planned for other consoles.

The Last Caretake is coming to PC via Steam.
