Robo Wars is a mobile platform game developed by a Polish indie studio, Simplicity Games and published by MobilWay S.A. This game is like Super Smash Brothers, but with robots. The objective of the game is for the player to defeat all the robot opponents. This is done through firing at the enemy and evading their attacks until the other robot is dead.
Initially, the player starts off in a small stage. The first level has a few barrels, ledges, large red buttons, and various crates. As the player progresses through the stages, the size of the arena grows larger. The number of ledges, large red buttons, and creates also increases.
In addition, the items listed above are meant to help or hinder the player in various ways. For instance, the ledges and barrels provide places to hide or recover fuel. Fuel is imperative during each match for two reasons. The first, is that it allows the player to fly around the stage. The second, is that it powers the player’s weapon and gives them the ability to fire at their enemy. If one runs out of fuel during a match, it will take time to regenerate. This happened to me more than once, and I lost quite a few matches because of this. Therefore, it is imperative the player keep an eye on how much fuel they have.
Another helpful item in the arena are the crates. Throughout each fight, crates will float down toward the player and their foe. These crates help in different ways. The image on the side of the crate dictates what type of aid is provided. For example, if there is a bubble shape on the crate, then that crate will surround the player in a bubble. This bubble is useful because it helps reduce damage taken by the enemy. However, this aid only lasts for so long and must be used wisely. The longer the match, the more crates that will appear.
Conversely, the large red buttons incumber the player. Whenever a robot approaches a large red button, a timer appears and begins to count down. Along with this timer, a loud alarm blares and two lasers on either side of the stage appear. The lasers move closer and closer to the center of the screen, which forces the player and their foe to fight in a smaller space. As if that was not enough, if one of the robots does not win in a certain amount of time, missiles will fire from above. All these items are meant to provide a sense of urgency to the fight.
Additionally, the player can upgrade the skills, weapons, and equipment of their robot. The first type of robot the player receives is blue and red. The skills, weapons, and equipment are basic and can only be upgraded with enough gold coins and gems. The more games the player wins, the more gold coins and gems they receive from loot crates. However, if the player loses games, the more gold coins and gems they lose.
Robo Wars is available for $6.99 for Nintendo Switch via the eShop.
I am a college student studying English at Michigan State University. My first video game was Icewind Dale I for the PC and I’ve been playing games ever since. Whenever I’ve had a particularly difficult day, games such as The Sims help me unwind. Some of my favorite games include the Bioshock, Fallout, Mass Effect, Wolfenstein, and latest Tomb Raider series.
