Introduction/Information about Rogue Waters
The game Rogue Waters officially releases today, September 30th, 2024, for PC via Steam. This game is a tactical turn based RPG where players must command their ship and crew through countless battles, both through ship battles and raids. I enjoy tactical games; They are plenty of fun for me, so I was happy to see how this game would play out. After playing Rogue Waters, I would say this is a very well thought out and very fun tactical game.
Gameplay
The gameplay for Rogue Waters will always leave players thinking of their next move. When players start the prologue of the game, they will instantly be thrown into a raid battle, raiding another ship. Here, the game will teach players the basics of combat in a raid battle. Each player will have a total of 4 units to take control of. Each of them can move around and use one action per turn. These actions include standard attacks, resting, and more. In order to attack, units must be within range of their enemy. Usually, this range is mainly players getting up close and personal right next to the enemy. Depending on where players position their units to attack their enemy can determine different outcomes. If units corner their enemy back against the wall, they can do extra damage. If a unit knocks an enemy into another enemy, then players can deal damage to both enemies.
Finally, if an enemy unit is next to the edge of the ship or waters, players can have their units attack them, pushing them off and into the waters. Of course, players can still attack them normally to do damage, but attacking enemies strategically will make the game much easier. After completing the raid battle, the game will next teach players about ship battles. The main goal of these battles is to take out the enemy ship’s main line of defense in order to raid them. Players also must be able to do this in 3 turns. To start, players will need to attack using their ship’s cannons. Doing this will cost points, of course, but is necessary in order to take down the enemy ship. The primary target in these battles is the enemy ship’s cannons. Once players take those out, they will be able to proceed with the raid battle. As players proceed through the game, they will gain new abilities, work to gain more crew members, and fight their way through raids.
Final thoughts
Overall, I believe that Rogue Waters is a very fun game with a very well made combat system. As I mentioned before, I enjoy tactical games similar to Rogue Waters, so I was very interested to see how the combat system worked. I was very happy to see how thought provoking the combat felt, and I also greatly enjoyed the aesthetic of the game. If you are the kind of player who enjoys thought provoking tactical combat games, then I would highly recommend this game.
